During the E3 Media & Business Summit today, Sony announced that it is returning back the 80GB PS3 to the market in September, but this time with a new price of US $399.99. This move is probably dictated by the Xbox 360 price cut which became official two days ago. The 80GB "Core Pack" PLAYSTATION 3 as it will be called will offer all of the features and functionality of the currently selling 40GB model, but with double the storage.

So it isn't a true 80GB model? It doesn't have backwards compatibility like the older 80GB models?

Not a good idea, IMO. It will lead to confusion.

All this different PS3 bundles with different size hard drive? Right now there is only 1 version of the PS3 being sold, when this is released there will be 2. What are you talking about? Or are you just bashing the PS3 for the hell of it?(Considering your utter praise of Microsoft for doing the exact same thing, and your bashing of Sony for it, I'm going to go with your an Xbox fanboy trolling to bash the PS3, but feel free to try and say otherwise.)

The best part about your statment is that there are actually more Xbox360 version on the market than PS3 versions.

And if you are talking about the different version that have come before this, there was more than just a hard drive difference.

Yes, you can change the hard drive in the PS3, but a lot of people don't want to or are too affraid to do it themselves.

I doubt it will have backwards compatibility, since they were talking about mainly doing it through software. That's at least what I've heard online, but I would see no reason for them to bring back the old hardware. That would cause a lot more confusion IMO. It would probably sell quite well though... I'd be tempted lol

isnt there a 40gb a 60gb and a 80gb and wasnt there another version?

they mustve been discontinued

either way there is elite soon to be replaced premium with 60gb and a arcade which im glad to say is a pathetic excuse to compete with the wii

not sure if the 20gb will be on the arcade but its beign replaced on the premium with a 60gb

im not sure what came in the ps3 bundles but i no that they brought a bundle with 2 pads
havnt they replaced the pads with dualshock 3?

oh and the ps3s with the old ps2 chips in them got discontinued now its emulation of ps2 games

i didnt rate xbox for having various types of console all it needed was a elite and premium adn one should have built in wireless or at least a wireless adapter

i dont mind having a proprietary hard drive or not being able to use a blue tooth headset because my headset came free with the 360 and i have a chatpad that also has a headset

i dont mind go bash the 360 but i dont see anything wrong with them now seeing as they brought out the better falcon versions and we have hdmi

of course id like built in wireless tho but a lot of gamers prefere using Ethernet cables for max speed

I disagree, for $30 more than a wii, you can play games that weren't designed for young children and girls - Fable, Gears, Final Fantasy 13, Fallout, GTA4, COD4...

So, there won't be an emotion chip, no private voice chat across games, no auto-pause when the XMB is triggered and custom soundtracks are available in some games? Are they still using 2x BR drives? You do get 20GB more space though. However, IMO this should be price right at $349.99.

2 things

1.ps3 pads never had rumble feature then they brought out pads that did to replace the old ones

2.xbox are trying to compete with wii by having a low cost 360, like why have a wii when you an have a hd graphics console they say, there are lots of kids games out for 360 like movie tie in and crash Bandicoot. sure people choose the wii for kids but in essence it TRYs to compete with the wii

yeah it not like anyone came over to the xbox 360 update news and slagged the update

im just saying whyt have another version of the ps3???

This one will replace the 40GB and will be Sony's "Main focus" so they say.

PS3 always came with DS3..

Actually, no, PS3 was released with the original SIXAXIS controller (not DualShock 3). Reason for this was supposedly over some lawsuit with regards to rumble. It wasn't until late last year before the DualShock 3 came out in Japan and wasn't until a couple of months ago before it showed up in North America. Only recently did Sony start to include the DS3 with the PS3.

Well, don't get angry at us for being behind. Women..

The point with the PS3 is to always get the cheapest model. You can just buy a seperate HDD and slap it on.. which is much better.

It will replace the 40 GB model. In other words, Sony is giving customers 40GB MORE space, for the same $400 price tag. This will be the only PS3 you can buy once September rolls around.

That isn't necessarily true. The original 20GB and 60GB models are seen as the best buy to some people since there is full PS2 backwards compatibility. The 80 GB Motorstorm and 80 GB MGS4 Bundle are more limited on backwards compatibility, but it is still included. The 40 GB PS3 offers NO backwards compatibility. So buying the 40 GB model, then buying a larger HDD, only adds more space, but still lacks features found in the 20 GB, 60 GB and 80 GB models.

Might have to Ebay a 40gb one when this gets released. Probably will sell for >$350

Not true. Originally, there were Xbox360 bundles with accessores that gave it different functionality.

Core had no hard drive, and had a wired controller.
The Premium system was the Core System with a wireless controller, 20GB Hard Drive, Wireless Adaptor.
The Platinum System was just the Premium System without the Wireless Adaptor bundled in.
Then came the Platinum System(v2.0) which added HDMI to the Platinum System.
Then there is the Elite System which is a Black Platinum System(v2.0) with a 120GB hard drive.

There has been at least 2 different system version, that both offer slightly different functionality, and several different bundles that added or removed different functionality.

There are only 4 different PS3 systems, it isn't hard to figure out which does what after about 5 minutes of research. Hell, I can tell you what they are off to the top of my head.

If you want ps1/2 compatibility, you have to buy used. The only one currently available new on the market is the 40GB, with NO backwards compatibility. I have, and recommend, the 60GB model, if you can find it.

If you want ps1/2 compatibility, you have to buy used. The only one currently available new on the market is the 40GB, with NO backwards compatibility. I have, and recommend, the 60GB model, if you can find it.

thanks, wanna sell it to me?

Actually the 80gb MGS4 bundle (widely available) has software backwards compatibility...and should play all popular ps2 titles.

I still recommend the 60GB with hardware support. That's why I didn't mention the 80GB.

I think that the 80GB bundle won't be sold in Europe... SCEE says that we Europeans don't have fast enough Internet to have the 80GB bundle, but we may expect the unexpected in Europe from SCEE.
