Any specific reason on choosing the AMD processor and motherboard over an intel setup? You may pay a little bit more but clock for clock the intel will walk all over a lot of amd setups.

I've been using AMD for 5 years, maybe more now, as well as I'm on a tight budget, quitting my job on Thursday.

That's a weak CPU you got there. You could have done much better. The rest of the setup is ok though.

I plan to OC it, of course. People say it hits 3ghz no problem.

Beats a 6000+ which I used to have, which runs hotter (48C at 80% in a VERY well ventilated Sunbeam full tower, 2 100+cfm 120mm fans, 3 40cfm 80mm fans) than what people report for the 4850E on air OC'd (41C full load) to the same speed.

I'm aiming for cool and quiet.

The 5000+ uses 20 more watts and probably runs hotter?

Or would it be a big difference?

A good all-round system. The only thing I would change is the mobo, it really doesnt do the rest of the system justice and OCing could be tricky with that board.

Any recommendations for a better one?

I'm really not concerned about the processor as long as I can bring it back to 3.0ghz.

Plus, SOMEONE has to use AMD or else they're gonna go bankrupt from not selling anything :p

I like to support the underdog, it's quite an ethical issue. Prevent price gouging, encourages better quality from opposing companies and AMD themselves.

Take the advice above, buy an intel! Even OCing the proc to 3.0 isn't going to cut it. I'm regretting my setup immensely (2300BE, 1.9 oc'd to 2.6). Get a decent board and that E7200 will OC to at least 3.8. I built a setup w/ an AMD about 9 months ago planning on keeping it for a few years (I like the underdog, too), and I will be switching it to an Intel beginning next year. If you are going to game any, there's just no competition from AMD. Built an intel rig for a friend last weekend w/ Q9450 (overkill, I know) and it just tears apart an AMD. You don't need to go that high, but really, look up reviews on the E7200. I think you will be much happier in the long run.

My brother's E6750/8800GTS rig got blown away by my old 6000+/2600XT rig, and it clocked higher and had a higher FSB processorwise.

I consistently pulled higher framerates on World in Conflict, Company of Heroes, and Supreme Commander.

What does an E7200 offer over an AMD 6000+ running at stock clocks?

Running at stock? They are very close to the same. Why ask about stock clocks when you know once overclocked the e7200 pulls far ahead.

My vote goes for a Biostar I45 + e7200 OR possibly e7300 when they become available.

Less heat output, 45nm, larger cache. The big thing about the chip is it will overclock like a dream.

nah don't listen to those Intel Farts. For what you are trying to do that CPU is more than enough. Its a work horse.

I am running a X2 4800 65w cpu in my media center. It plays HD and BD movies flawless. Buttery smooth. 8600GT VC HDCP card works good along with the cpu. And I am not even running a high end board like you opted for. Its a ECS NForce6M-A board that is a ass to OC. Right now I am at 215 * 12.5.

I can record HD program with one tuner, analog problem with another tuner and watch a Blu-ray movie all at the same time without missing a beat, the cpu never goes more than 45% with C'n'Q enabled, ie it runs at 1.8G doing all these work. After watching a full BD movie the cpu never goes more than 45C in a 30C living room, the cpu is sitting in a not so good Ahanix media center case which is sitting inside a glass media center rack, so no airflow there either. Basically I am trying hard to cook it, but it runs cool with a crapiest Thermaltake copper cooler.

So don't see a reason why you need a Intel.

my 2 cents.

That board is horribly cheap and only supports 2gb memory.

I really don't wanna skimp on the motherboard, I've had too much trouble with cheap ASUS boards in the past, and ASUS is a brand I know to usually be reliable and efficient.

I'm pretty sure that is incorrect as the original older revision board supports up to 4gb, G31. Only difference between them is updated bios as far as I know.

Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's not good.

A 5000+ actual runs pretty cool oc. I did 3.2Ghz at 28c on air. Never would get above 38c. But if you do video editing, it's best to have atleast a 5000+ or higher. Strongly recommended higher. Like 6000+ like someone said above. But the phenoms are awesome option too. But AMD is a good option.

Here's a decent board.

AMD is fine, 6000+ is 125W, though. That's a little high. You could get a cheap Intel 65W that will do more per clock cycle. I have no problem with AMD (look at my system specs) and I'm not some "Intel Fart". I just try to find what will give me the most performance for the price and lowest wattage. Go look at benchies if you want proof. You can see people running nice vid cards (4850, 8800gt, etc) on an AMD system and the same cards on an Intel system and the Intel system will consistently bench higher. Check Futuremark Ticker http://www.yougamers.com/benchmarkticker/ for a few minutes and see for yourself.

I say, well nice ..., only, take a geforce 8800gt.
i have a similar system, 4800 x2, 4 gb, 690g Mobo. And of course i have had a 3870.
But the 8800 is much better, belive me and tests on the www also on tpu.
COD 4 runs better (singleplayer) ... if you want to play cod 4 (multiplayer is fine too with the radeon, anyway it depends on the resolution ... :)). buy a 8800gt. (there will be cod5 soon)
I bought a 8800gt from ecs with arctic accelero and it is cool and quiet and rocks tha 3870.
And i would not go for oc, pay 15-20 Dollar more (or so) and you got a 5600 2,9 Ghz.
But that 400 mhz wont boost your games ... i mean you may not notice it. If its 2,5 or 2,9 Ghz (in most games).
:)
peace

I've really never worked with Intel, so help me pick out some alternatives if I DO decide to go with them :p

Whatever you picked is perfect. Trust me. After I bought this Kill-A-Watt thing every PC that I build goes thru that tested and then goes to production. In this rising energy prices that is the best tool a system builder could have. Based on the components without the Video card, your setup should consume less than 50w on idle and at load around 90w. You can add additional wattage for the video card.

For a media center pc the less watts it uses the better you save since it might be running 24/7 recording all your favorite shows and playing it on demand.

I run my home server based on a ECS 6100SM-M + X2 3800 (the 65w version) + 2 GB ram + 2 x 500 GB SATA + 1 x PCI gigabit network card all for under 55w idle, 24/7. Extremely quiet with 1 92mm fan and 1 120mm fan with auto speed control.

Like someone suggested you can go with X2 5000 and easily OC to 3G. I built a work pc for my bro using a X2 5000 black edition got from cdawall. Its Ocd to 3G and the whole PC at idle only uses 69w and load uses 110w. VC is 3450 tho. That PC finished authoring a 1 hr home video including burning to DVD on a 8x slow burner exactly 34 min. Both cores cranked to 100% it just flies.

Then your decision.

FYI I have built Intel setups for my friends, so its just not one sided.

Yeah, I like the 45W processor because my comp stays on all day and night anyways.

I won't even be burning the stuff as of yet, mainly just recording and storing to harddrive.
