The Radeon HD 4870 X2 (R700), the flagship graphics card by AMD is observed to have a lower than expected price-point that seems to justify its performance lead (through pre-release performance evaluations). Going by several reports in the past few months, the R700 was expected to have a US $549.99 launch price, at a time when the competitor NVIDIA was pricing their flagship product in that range. In the period between then and now, the price of the GeForce GTX 280 plummeted from $649.99 to $449.99 while still regarding $499.99 as the company standard price, with some stores and partners in the US selling for as low as $429.99, a huge lop of its original price.

NordicHardware studied several European stores that began listing the R700 for as low as 395 €, with the North American markets keeping their shelf prices set at around the $500 mark. With these price points set as standards, there's bound to be flexibility in pricing, coupled with the launch driver which AMD claims to have fixed several issues in both feature and performance aspects, the product is expected to deliver a level of performance that justifies its price while still remaining 'competitive' per say, and not commanding a high price merely because it holds the performance crown, again going by pre-release performance evaluations.

Thank god some reason in the pricing. I really hope this becomes a trend, w/ the performance crown kings still being competitively priced rather than just jacking up the price to preposterous levels for little gain. Now AMD just needs to do this same thing to intel, and we will be golden. I may just become a fanboy yet.......

They're not screwed, they'll be fine. They will certainly answer back, and we've seen they will make themselves competitive if they are not so right out of the gate. They lost this round, but they will certainly remain for another.........

Gotta have competetivism...otherwise we lose due to longer term price gouging that doesn't make sense for the performance delivered.

Good to see ATI getting a few harder punches in, it's also good to see NV isn't sitting idle either. And with Intel looming with something that could possibly compete, things can only get more interesting from here!

I have seen gtx 280 as cheap as $340 after rebate which is plenty competitive. ;)

Nvidia is very competitive right now. They lowered their prices to match equivalently performing ati cards. The only difference is this time ati will have the top performer, and I'm glad, b/c they are of the notion of charging the rightful price per performance for their product.

Performance isn't the only deciding factor in this. There is price and marketing to consider. NV has considerably stronger marketing going in it's favor, and both ATI and NV are a match in price to performance in everything but the very top end.

Yeah, they lose this round as far as performance at the top end, but they will be fine until they come out with something else. They aren't in trouble in any way.

So wait, 4870x2 works like a internal CrossFire (it needs CrossFire profiles and/or special software/driver layer to fully utilize both GPUs), or do both GPUs emulate a single GPU on a hardware level? (no need for software/driver layer?)

only bad thing for nvidia is production of bad graphics and chipset in past, and that will have an impact on profit

Yes thats somewhat true but Nvidia is taking a lot of pain from the huge change of customers when HD 4800 series started to walk tall. The HD 4870 X2 is going at an amazing price this way, even though its about $50 more than the 280 consumers will still go for it once they hear about two HD 4870s dominating the 280 at mostly a very large percentage, but that was $600 down the drain to do that. Now that the HD 4870 X2 is on the horizon at a price tag of $500, power builders will have a budget break by buying a single slot mobo (PCIE 2.0 require of course) along with the HD 4870X2 for a mere $600, awesome upgrade at an awesome price. Even though most builders will dream about Xfiring these brutes in their machine, you'll need a lot of wattage in your PSU for a better quality upgrade so one of these should serve your well enough. My guess now is that Nvidia is keeping their development close to the build of DX11.

in crisis test nvidia go far

Well not that far, The 4870, in crysis, almost touches the 280gtx at 1900 x 1200 res. with very high settings.
http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/14990/12

And the 4870 x2 beats a single 280gtx in crysis and only 3 fps slower than 2 280gtxs in sli.
http://www.techreport.com/articles.x/15105/5

Why not mentioning "age of conan or grid" where xfire does better than sli.
