My 8800GT that is less then 2 weeks old and it is dieing already. I am going to be taking it back to bestbuy. They also have a 9600GT for alittle less. How much better or worse is the 9600GT

When gaming or benching the screen will hang but before that i get lines in the screen. I underclocked the GPU,shaders, mem and still get the same problem. I have ran CPU at stock speeds system ram at 800(1066 stock) updated drivers, turned the fan on 100% used a 350w PSU that i had laying around just to power video card. And NONE OF IT took care of the problem. I even flashed my mobo bios

I would hardly trust a source like the INQ with their well known reputation of embellishing a story. If it were me I would take the 8800GT back, snap up another one or a 9600GT, and buy a decent cooler for the card at the same time to ensure nothing can overheat.

Yes, it's slower and you will notice it. By how much I don't know off hand though. The 8800 GT (when it works) is a nice card and it's in the neighborhood of a GTS 512.

Gotta agree with East...the 9600gt is slower, and you WILL notice. I have owned both cards.

Be sure to pick up a decent 3rd party cooler, the INQ may embellish stories, but the one thing they are right on is the fact NV GPUs are blast furnaces.

my 8800GT only runs 61c-63c underload even when overclocked with the fan on 100%

Yeah, but those fans are LOUD at 100%. An aftermarket cooler will cool things down even more, and will be much quieter. At the very least, replace the thermal paste with MX-2, so you can bring the fan speed down to around 80%.

Still a bit toasty with 3rd party coolers capable of bringing that down another 10c or so. But still, the 8800GT shouldnt of died unless the thermal solution for cooling the memory and \ or VRMs is horrible.

Honestly, there is nothing wrong with a 63C load temp. I would take it back and replace it.

for £20 you can pick up an accelero - 30 odd degrees on idle my GT with one of those. 35 idle with my new vortexx.

Hmm this makes me wonder about my 8800GTs I went through.
My 8800GT xxx's had a VF830 on it and came with no memory cooling yet the card came overclocked stock.

The 8800GT is easily better than the 9600GT. The extra shaders on the 8800GT give it a huge advantage, especially with PhysX. ;)

The GDDR3 doesn't really need cooling, even when overclocked, especially with a cooler like the VF830 blowing air directly down onto them.

I wouldn't worry about no RAMsinks, if the HS is designed to cover the memory so air from the fan flows over it healthily, it'll be cooled better than having the chips covered.

It varies by game to game with the 8800GT generally being about 3-10% faster, usually around 4-5% in most games. Some games are very close though, but if you can get an 8800GT for around $100.00 (which is the cost for many 9600GT's right now) then go for it. My 9600GT was heavily OC'ed from XFX though and is very close to an 8800GT.

^ WTF 320 MB on a graphics card is way too little!

There isn't much difference between a 9600GT and an 8800GT, I chose the 9600gt because it was cheaper looking back though it was probably the wrong decision... I think.

the 9600gt is about 4-5% slower than the 8800gt. But the 9600gt is extremely efficient if you sli it.
