hi im 16 years old and i want to make a pc for high end gaming and school work. But i im not sure if the computer will work with these specs, they are:

Asus Rampage Formula Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 LGA775 'Yorkfield' 2.66GHz 12MB-cache (1333FSB) Processor

OCZ 8GB (4x2GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz Quad Channel Platinum Low Latency XTC Series DDR2

Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB + Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB ATA-100 16MB Cache – OEM

Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 2048MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express)

please could you tell me if this will work, and any suggestions on changing it would be appreciated as i dont know much about motherboards and processors. Although i deffinatly want the 4870x2.

thanks

Yep, that looks good, do you really need 8GB of memory, perhaps a 2 x 2GB kit of faster memory may be better for your needs....you didnt mention what operating system? and is that 2nd hard drive IDE?

Ohhh and make sure you get at least a 24inch monitor to do that 4870x2 justice.

Definately get SATA II drives. I recommend a Corsair TX750W, awesome PSU. I havn't tried any of these, but some will probably recommend PC Power & Cooling and any Seasonic OEM'd PSU's. Make sure the PSU has an 8 pin and a 6 pin PCI-E plug.

What about a case, or do you already have one?

Ide is a pain in the ass cause of the cables, there is no reason to use it nowadays. That drive should be fine. Are you using a sata dvd/rw too?,may as well use a sata one and get rid of ide altogether.

personally, I wouldn't get 8 gigs of RAM. If your gonna run a 64bit operating system, I'd get 4 gig's or if your getting a 32 bit operating system I'd get 3 gig's(two stick 1 gig each and two sticks 512 each, you'd need to get these 4 sticks to run dual channel)

Also, like already asked, what PSU are you planning on getting? Several of us have asked because it's one of the most important choices your gonna make. A bad PSU will die and has a good chance of taking your intire system with it(power surge frying your motherboard/cpu/graphic card). Several people have recommended the corsair 750 watt PSU. Damn good power supply, corsair is making the best PSUs currently. Though with only one 4870x2 card, you don't really need that much wattage. A corsair 600 or 650 watt PSU will do the job just fine.

Also, keep in mind, Intel is releasing thier new line of processors next month. These are gonna be out preforming the core2 cpus the way the core2 cpus out perform the AMD cpus.

Not sure on your budget...?
But this would make a good system;

plus about £50 for Vista x64, and case is not important, just in there to give a rough price.

the motherboard is a good choice, your good with that.

and why not 8gig cos then when everyone has 8gig i wont have to change it ?

because your getting ddr2 ram, which is in the process of being replaced by ddr3 ram. Besides, if it isn't being used, why not use the money for the extra ram for a better processor(q9450 over the e8500).

but if i get 4gig memory which one would be the fastest?

G.SKILL DDR2 1066 ram is probably your best bet. Very good and highly recommended.

Here my tip - Ditch the WD hard drives... they are the least reliable hdd's i have ever bought and many of my friends have bought... i have seen at least 10-15 die right after the warranty goes.

My suggestion... go seagate. If they die, they replace them no questions. I haven't had one die yet either ( been using them for 5 years)
