i think it is down to luck with HDD's and the top Mf's seem to trade blows. Some people just have better luck with some MF's than others. but lets not start that topic again!

IMO, just get the best price/performance/capacity from one of the TOP MF's (WD, Seagate, etc)

I picked the WD6400AAKS for me and for a suggestion, cus it has 320GB platters, so can perform wihin touching distance of the velociraptors.

ive had 1 WD drive die on me in the last 6 or 7 yrs ,they seem very reliable imo.

whereas ive only ever had 2 seagates and 1 of them died ,so 50% of my seagate drives died

DDR3 isnt worth the price/performance atm.

I wont be going DDR3 until I go nehalem next year, when I wont have a choice.

but im planning on keeping this pc for along time as i wont have the money when i leave home so in the long term would it be better, and is ddr3 faster than ddr2 atm?

Technically yes, in benches yes, in games, about 1 fps.

If you are planning on keeping this rig for sometime, I cant recommend to you enough, to wait until Christmas time, or the Jan sales and build yourself a nehalem rig. You'll be kicking yourself if you dont.

nehalem is the new intel platform.
its brings two new sockets into the equation. The main one being for gamers/enthusiasts is the socket 1366. Thats why I'm saying to wait. if you buy a system now, you will have to upgrade CPU and MOBO when it comes out if you want it. Take a look through the news, there are loads of articles on it. You will also see we are getting loads of shots and details of new mobos. It is expected to be officially announced this september and available for retail by october.

I'm going to upgrade after it has been out for about 3-4months as that ties in with my bday, and allows prices to settle and initial bugs to be sorted.

its the fact you are saying you are going to keep the system for several years, so whats a couple of months wait to get the platform...

I have to agree with Alex here. If your plan is to keep this machine for a long time, wait a couple months for the X58 boards and Nehalem chips. The current motherboards won't work with Nehalem.
