The X1600 due to its 512MB memory and that its capable of sm3.0 (improved shaders) whereas the x800 is only capable of sm2.0 (which i found out recently)

Ok, thanks for the reply. I think I shall purchase the X1600 then.

get an x800gto and unlock it... much better deal. 256 less mb of ram... you won't see the difference, but you'll definatelly see the performance difference between the two cards, the x800 destroying the x1600 tbh. unlocking is risky though, you may or may not be able to, but even if you can't it'll still beat the x1600, even in sm3 games, because of shear speed. It may not be able to do the newest shaders, but it can do the old stuff much faster.

Now im stuck between the 2 again!:banghead: .

How easy is it to unlock the X800 and is there a risk involved?

In all current games the x800gto will beat the x1600pro at stock speeds. The x1600xt will about match a x800. Both cards can be overclocked fine, but the x800 would have some headroom because the chip is just a dumbed down x850 xt (pe even) while the x1600pro's chip is a little more limited. Like someone said, the unlocking is pretty simple - the main "risk" is you may get luck of the draw and not get an unlockable card. A friend of mine just got a x800gto from newegg last week and unlocked it to x800xt with a bios flash with no problem. If I was staying with my agp board that's what I'd do for the $. But I decided to go pci-x/amd64 instead and got a x1800xl =)

Ok, thanks mate. I'll go with the x800 then. Another quick question, could my motherboard restrict my GPU's performance? I have a ASUS 4800 Deluxe MB.

The X1600 is only 128bit but the X800 is 256bit, I think this would be a factor to consider before purchasing one :)

Sorry to sound stupid, but I take it 256bit is better?

a P4C800 deluxe? should be fine. it has an agp 8x/Pro (agp 3.0) slot from reviews I've seen good performance for that board compared to others that are the same chipset etc.

and yes, 256bit is better- that's referring to the memory's bandwidth. The main advantage for most users is that means the card's overclockability is better performance-wise.
