Well personally I would be going for the 7900GT with its overclocking ability (http://www.vr-zone.com/?i=3437&s=1) and more modern (slightly) core architecture.

Below is a review of the X1900GT (yes i know it's not the one you're looking for but bear with me) which compares this latest card to the 7900Gt and the X1800XT so would be very useful to you I believe. :D

7900gt

the overclocking can be beastly

and i like the fact that the 7900 is a second revision on their top chip, whereas the x1800 was replaced by the x1900 like *snaps* as far as stability, heat, power, etc

plus, i always feel bad for the 256 x1800xt, it wants to be 512 so bad!

ummm the x1800xt stomped the 7900gt in the review for the x1900gt. lol
yes the x1800xt 256 mb will easily beat the 7900gt in most areas, but for overclocking the 7900gt can shorten the gap as the x1800xt 256mb doesn't overclock as wellas it's 512mb brother.
between the two it becomes a matter of preference, the x1800 will run better at stock, but require more power. the 7900gt needs to be overclcoked to beat th x1800 but uses less power.

X1900GT, has the potential to outclass the 7900GT with a good 3rd party cooler, though the 7900GT is still a good card. Eitherway your not losing anything really.

Go with the X1900XT as it is a better card ,better quality picture and out performs in almost all bench testing ,At stock the x1900XT blows away the overclocked 7900:toast:

That's actually dangerous unless you have upgraded the notoriously flimsy cooler that comes with most 7900 GT's. :D

No idea what nVidia dudes were smoking when they chose that cooler, the ones on the 7800 series are much better.

Not the same category ;)

The 7900 GT is much cheaper, and it seems he already bought it.

Well, i may get the x1800xt now. Looks a better card. Are they good at Overclocking? What program do you use for that, ATI Tool?

At stock speeds the X1800 XT 512 is said to be a good contender to the 7900 GT.

Are they good at Overclocking?

Not nearly as good as the 7900 GT with a decent cooler, and that's the reason why it's usually the X1900's that are compared with the 7900's.

x1800xt 256, not so good at overclocking, but the guy above me absoultely doesn't know what he's talking about with the 512mb one. lol

the x1800xt 512mb version has plenty of headroom, on stock cooling I hit 740/880(1760) (thats a 115MHZ core/130(260)mhz memory overclock on stock cooling) which resulted in an 11k 3dmark 05 with the cpu at 2.9GHZ, my current top on water is 786/950(1900) which results in an 11800 in 05 with the cpu at 2.9.

bottom line you'll need to overclock your cpu to get max performance out of any of these cards. 2.8GHZ on an athlon 64 is highly recmended to alleiviate any bottlenecks. and if you're going ati make sure you have a beefy psu.

The X1800XT 256 has better core readings than a 7900 at stock. The most my mate got out of his 7900 GT 256 was 550 Core and 1800 Mem. This is without doing any volt mods.

OpenGL = NVidia & DirectX = ATI

Typically, isn't the std. "rule-of-thumb" still pretty much this:

OpenGL display based games - go NVidia

vs.

DirectX display based games - go ATI

?

* OR, has this changed lately? See, as I have said here before: I'm your "once-every-3-to-5 year-hardware-study-&-purchase" type... I learn when I go to buy, & then more detail afterwards.

(AND, things DO change in this field, like mad!)

APK

P.S.=> It's the one I typically follow, because history always plays/replays it out everytime ATI &/or NVidia release new/next-gen cards it seems for nearly a decade now!

(I.E.- It matters, largely, on the types of games you play and what display method they utilize)...

E.G. -> I largely ONLY play IDSoftware games (been following their entire Wolf3d, Doom, Quake series' since their first models is why & like 'em all)!

(PLUS, I have them ALL, even the early 90's stuff like Wolf3d 1.4, Doom I & II, and all Quakes in OpenGL overlaid display form due to ports by industrious gamers/programmers)

So, that ALL said?

Well, I go w/ NVidia, because they typically do the BEST on OpenGL style games (of which IDSoftware uses as their display method)... apk

Thanks (if you're referring to what I wrote)!

See - I tend to be more "software-centric"!

That is simply because my job is centered on that arena, & hasn't been "hardware-centric" (primarily) in more than a decade now!

(With my having moved on to diff. areas of this varied field which are far more software design centric).

I tend to look @ things from that angle, & when it comes to vidcards + where their strengths lie?

Typically, NVidia latest gen is ALWAYS stronger (has been so far, everytime) in OpenGL than ATI is, but weaker in DirectX gaming (where ATI is stronger in DirectX, but weaker in OpenGL).

APK

P.S.=> Just like so much in this field? It really ALL depends on what you use/do the most & HOW you go about it... apk
