Benchmark Scores 2cm mark on bench with a razor blade.
Using the 8.9's with ATT.
18mark gain over the 8.8's in 06'.
Not anywhere as big of a gain as the 124 gain I had with the 8.8's over the 8.7's but still it's a gain.

Resistance is futile, we will make your system our own, green is our color.
Yeah thanks.

I tell you what the damn issue is, ATI can't even code a decent working normal driver without adding crap to it, let alone with extra nonsense, and the 8.8's didn't install right on my system and I did NOT modify my card's BIOS, but no doubt all the crap they put in messed up an already shaky driver installer to become an utter horror that bluescreens your system.

But OK, they decided to go this road and by doing so give back some market share to nvidia, good for them.
Pity though that I'll have to stick with 8.7 and won't ever be seeing any OpenGL3.0 andsoforth on this card, pity too I'll have to advise people to go nvidia, or intel.

I've had no problems. These 8.9's are working great for me. My card runs a bit cooler too.

Don't know how many people are still using AGP, but apparently Sapphire have the 8.9's working for them. I'll try 'em out now.

Sapphire Driver Download page.

XP users (such as myself) have to use a German version of CCC if they want them. A tad lame that.

??? I downloaded Cat 8.9 from ATI site and just ran install OVER THE TOP (without uninstalling) previous drivers/CCC. It worked flawlessly. No patches, no mods, no tricky uninstall/install methods. 3850AGP on Win2K3, EN

I removed older 8.8 drivers, defragged removed catalyst, defragged and downloaded and installed the new 8.9 drivers. the screen locks in 640x480 4 bit, and catalyst says that the driver is not supported by this version of catalyst. so i rollback driver to 8.8 and now 8.9 catalyst works, any clues???

didnt remove them properly, grab driver cleaner pro Follow directions to the T and Guru3Ds cleaning utilities, after removing drivers do a Search for ATI related material including hidden files and folders, remove them.

Sounds like your system is fubar. You need to learn how to maintain your system properly before passing blame to others. I have had no serious problems myself with ANY ati drivers.

Ok I need someone to school me in OpenGL. I kinda understand how it works for games and such.

1. 3.0 just seems to be a small revision to 2.1. What happen to "Longs Peak"?

2. Also does anyone know if this new revision will improve current OpenGL games or is this just bloatware until a game utilizes it?

Well that was quite the slap, but alas I had experiences with nvidia.. need I say more?
So I'm not a fanboy of ATI nor nvidia, I'm just annoyed how I have to go through hell to install simple drivers all the time, and then try to roll back if I find they are ass, so I vent my feelings of annoyance.

And the fact is that for some reason only very few people on the planet, less than a handful of the 6.8 billion, are able to code a decent driver, and so if they know it's so hard I think it would be prudent to not try to go fancy and keep things basic and working.
And coding in drivers that overvolting causes a disable of drivers won't work anyway because people so hardcore into that stuff will find ways around it, but the extra code you put in the drivers which is invalid for 99.9% of the people WILL cause issues because it is bound to have bugs. (although we don't know the reasoning or what's going on actually so this might not be what's gong on)

Make sure your old drivers are completely uninstalled. Most of the driver install problems are caused by Microsoft Visual C++ which should also be uninstallied in "add/remove programs" before installing new drivers.

Isn't OpenGL 3.0 compatable with older versions as well?

I don't think you have the right idea. According to the release notes of the driver, this adds the first round of support for OpenGl 3.0. Here is what it adds:
OpenGL™ 3.0 support - Phase 1

This release of Catalyst™ introduces OpenGL™ 3.0 extension support. In upcoming Catalyst™ releases AMD will continue to expand its support for OpenGL 3.0 extensions. The following is a list of supported extensions in Catalyst 8.9:

· ARB_half_float_pixel

· ARB_draw_instanced

· ARB_instanced_arrays

· EXT_texture_compression_3dc

· EXT_texture_compression_rgtc

· EXT_texture_compression_latc

· EXT_texture_shared_exponent

· EXT_depth_buffer_float

· EXT_gpu_shader4

· ARB_map_buffer_range

These are sort of like function calls that an OpenGl programmer could make if they wanted to. By your logic, since my SSE4A isn't being used by programmers (or even SSE4.1 on Intel machines), then it is bloatware. I don't agree with that.

Nah, didn't work for me. Maybe it's down to the fact you have PCIe on your board as well as AGP.

The guys at notebookreview talked me into updating to the 8.9's when I refused to get the 8.8's due to the black screen of death with moded bios files.

But they told me crossfire is working with Crysis now so I had to give it a shot.

To be save I reflashed the cards to stock bios EXCEPT I kept the fan speed fix in there. So looks like having a modded fan speed so the cards dont fry is ok with the new cat drivers.

Now I need to find a good program to overclock the cards again.

And crossfire still doesn't seem like its working for me in Crysis :(

It looks to me that ati is working on the 4870 powerplay problem, the flicker when changing ram clock is less.

I really REALLY should update my cat drivers. think i'm still on 8.4 or 8.5 or something around there

that shouldn't be a problem if your on PCI Express, Myself i'm on hotfix 8.5s because after 8.6 hotfix they claimed to be for Radeon 2K and higher boards, i just wonder if they are going to be doing the 3 Month AGP Driver release like they claimed to originally be doing, and also i learned that it is not worth upgrading drivers every month unless if your having Instability Problems.
