Sudden Framerate drops

A few days ago I installed Vista x64.
I noticed a huge decrease in performance. I have installed the latest drivers for my 9800GTX.

TF2 XP : Up to 300fps (If I'm lucky) / Average 100-200
TF2 Vista: Up to 140fps/ average 45

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but I have 2 "Program files" folders.

The program files thing is normal. That`s a sharp drop in performance. Everyone sees a drop from xp to vista but that seems higher than usual

Might be a stupid question, but is SP1 installed on Vista?

SP1 is installed along with all updates. I don't use AA either. There is also constant stuttering even with framerates up to 50fps. (If I can get that high)

After I close a game, it always says "Hl2.exe has stopped working"

I've never done anything. Everything is at stock speeds.

"After I close a game, it always says "Hl2.exe has stopped working"' - This is normal for Vista on some machines.

If you have constant stuttering, it sounds like something is running in the background and using your CPU. Hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and check for programs using a lot of CPU cycles and disable any that are.

As for an average of 45 FPS to 140 on Vista with that card, this sounds normal depending on game settings and your resolution. Though it should feel very smooth.

The only other thing I can think of for stuttering might be heavy internet traffic eg: downloading torrents etc. while gaming online

It seems fine now. Everything works great.

You updated Vista, didnt you?

A clean install of x64 will always run games like crap until you update it. This is especially true for valve games, particularly in scenes with smoke. I had the same issues when i first got the system.

I find running Process Lasso helps a lot, especially for games.
