Hey all!

Im building a computer for my friend, out of some spare parts i have. But im missing a gfx card! So i was thinking about getting a 4850 - but a 3870 is a little cheaper, so he can get a better cpu cooler!

So what should i choose? a 4850 or a 3870?

Specs:

Gigabyte 965p-ds4 v. 3.3
some cheap corsair ram - 2 gig
Intel core2 e6400

Go with the 4850. The improvement in AA alone are with it.

I suppose that depends on how much gaming and what kind of monitor he has. A 3870 would just fine for any 20" monitor or less, and with a little overclocking, it will do quite well in most games. The 4850 will obviously have better performance, and will be slightly more future proof. FYI, I have a 3850 that I'm selling for $55, if you are interested.

Depends on the PSU 520w means nothing without knowing the specific outputs available.

That looks a little weak to me, but it should handle a 4850.

I guess it could work... are you planning to OC the card and the CPU? That along with the extra stuff like HDDs, fans, and optical drives will make or break this PSU.

That PSU will be plenty powerful enough to run a 4850. People are overly concerned about power requirements now.

Dont think its gonna get overclocked - maybe a little to 3ghz, but its done that before with a 3870

I highly recommended the HD 4850. It's 800 stream processors completely outclass the HD 3870 when shaders are put graphics at high demand. Just get any Hd 4850, put on a descent aftermarket cooler, and you are good to go. Reason being is that the temperatures in the HD 4850 are hot enough to flip eggs on it.

My corsair hx520 runs my pc fine with my cpu at 3.8ghz and my 4850 at 760/1200.

But i would say go for the 4850 anyway.

I would just go with the 4850, 4850 is just better man, heck if anything the 4670, is a good pick, 4850 is like one best card the red camp has pulled out in a long time, and hmm, and my box states 450w is the minimum for a 4850, 550w for crossfire...granted having extra wattage is good, granted its not needed but still, And I agree the 4850's the single slot coolers with the exception of sapphires 1gb counterpart are hot enough to cook eggs on em,

Go for the 4850. You'll be very happy with it's performance. And your PSU, it's perfectly fine for running that card, even OC'd. It seems your rig is going to be complete soon. If you need any more help, TPU is here.
