Hey Everyone,

What would be a better card:

An AGP 9800XT 128mb card OR an AGP X700 PRO 256mb card?

Also, if i get either of these cards, would i need to upgrade from a 200W power supply? I have a small case, so its hard finding a decent PSU that will fit :(

Thanks in advanced! :)

Cheers :toast:

thats a hard choice. The 700 is newer but 128 bit mem. I have the 9800 and in its day it was good. But any X800 kicks its butt.
I would probably go with the 700 (cause of the 256mb mem). There is a good chance the PS wont work but if you dont have too many fans or lights or OC mabye. Check out Newegg for smaller PS.

Well the system is as follows:

2.6Ghz HT, 512K L2 cache Northwood processor
Abit Mobo
1GB PC3200 RAM (2x 512mb)
80GB seagate barracuda 7200RPM
Gigabyte 4x Dual layer DVD burner
Geforce FX 5200 128mb (lol both the 9800XT and X700 PRO are heaps better :p)
6-in-one card reader

I just got the processor fan, one 40mm case fan, and one 70mm case fan, no coloured LED's though there is an LCD screen on the front of the case (its an abit digidice). Ive only OC'd the CPU once and gfx card once, to see how far i could get it :), but other than that, it is at stock all the time.

My problem is that after i buy one of these cards, i wont have any $ left to get a new PSU, and i dont want to buy the card if it isnt going to work :p. Also, if im going to upgrade my PSU, i may as well go all the way and get something like an X800 or X1600, but that will take too long to save up for, and the 5200 is starting to get pretty old (although i can play BF2 on it without any lag :)...lowest settings @ 1280x1024

Yeah, as you can see from my other post, i just got an X800PRO (flashed to XT PE), but thats in my other system with a normal sized case. This is where all my $ went (with the Arctic cooler :)) so i just want an average card that will play new games without lag, not asking for everything turned up to the DEAD max like the X800 can do :) (lol this X700PRO/9800XT card is for my brother, i got the X800 )

EDIT:
In my abit PC with the 200W PSU, i had a 128mb 6600 which worked very well, until it died on me :(

Thanks for the quick response, hope to hear more :) lol

Where do you live Pinchy. Cause here in Reno we have several second hand stores where I can but 300 and 350watt PS for about $10.

I just bought a 450 watt PS new for $19 on line. (no way its really 450 watts but it seems to work)

Its not really the wattage of the PSU, its more the size. The psu that needs to fit would need to have like a 20mm fan. See, when i got the comp, i got told that its would be very hard for me to upgrade - and it really is. See, these smaller PSU's are more rare, hence, more expensive. Btw, im in syd, australia...and as you know US$ means more AU$ (thanks to the exchange rate :p)

Thanks for the reply :)!

A "E-Machine" is a computer that they sell here. I think the E stands for economy. They also have a small PS that costs more than Regular computers.
If there is any chance I hope you will look for a regular type of computer case so that way future computer upgrades will be easier.
You may be able to get a inexpensive case with a PS. Than just switch the mobo and parts from your old case to the new one.

Nope, its not an E-machine, its just two and a half years old. I do not really want to upgrade the case, because i like the case i got now, its really small and got a large LCD at the front :) :p. If you do a google image search on "abit digidice", you can see what it looks like, its pretty neat. Yeah, so i think ive made the decision to go with the X700, but if i MUST get a new PS, i'll save up for a 6800 LE, and unlock to 6 vertex shaders and 16 pipes.
Thanks for all your replies mark :)

LOL that looks so cool. That deserved the 9 :). Good job.

Yeah, so do you think i will definatly need the PS for an X700? What do u mean 'make' the PS?

Thanks again for the fast responses, and again, top job on the lego case!

If you measure your PS and send me a pict I might be able to find one. If i cant find one I can build a better one in your PS case. Did you see my PS for Lego? Its 200 watt and there is a picture with it next to the memory stick (same size as the memory..
It would be a fun challenge for me...

It's easy to determine a PSU's actual wattage as long as you know the amperage on the 12v rail. Just multiply amperage by 12. Formula:

amperes*volts=watts

This will give you the average output in watts. Only high quality PSU manufacturers rate their PSU's with the *real* values, most others use values that are near the absolute peak wattage which is not a useful spec but looks good on the box.

A good example of an "honest" rating is the Enermax EG365P-VE. This model is the cheapest Enermax (it costs about $60) but it provides 26A on the 12v rail so it's definitively not a low end unit. Enermax conservatively rates it at 350 watts but its peak wattage output is close to 700 watts. From many other less scrupulous brands (including Antec now, sad to say) such a PSU would be rated anywhere between 450w and 600w

Mark as far as I know the Digidice uses the Enhance ENP-2320 PSU (Pinchy could confirm).

Dimensions, pic and specs:

Enhance ENP-2320

It looks like the typical horizontal case desktop PSU's that were common back in the 1990's. Those are indeed quite expensive nowadays. This particular model appears to be only available in Europe and Australia, it's not in the Enhance USA catalog.

If you are to assemble a PSU for Pinchy keep in mind that Australia's domestic current is 240V-50Hz ;)

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the info Mellough, and all the help Mark.

Yeah, im pretty sure my PSU is a Enhance ENP-2320, as the fan looks the same as the pic and i didnt change the PSU when i bought it.

So, judging by what you said, im assuming the PSU is only like 120W, which will definatly not be enough to run an X700, and no where near enough for a 6800.

Well, do you guys know how much it will be to upgrade the PSU to run something like a 6800? (Im not going to bother going with the X700, if im going to upgrade the whole PS, and for around $50 more than an X700, i can get a 6800 LE and unlock all the pipes)

Also, im a little bit confused. On my other computer, its got a 400W PSU (i always knew it wasnt that great) but is only 17A @ 12V, so thats like a 204W, yet, it runs the X800 with no hassles.

Thanks for all the help guys

Cheers :toast:

The PS I listed was 16A @12V for $20. That should play the X800 or X700 fine, but the 6800 is another thing (especially if you OC or unlock pipes.)

Than you would need more like a reg PS.(there is a possability that it may work, but unlikely)

I benchmarked my brother's 256MB X700 against my 128Mb 9800pro modded to XT. The X700 beat it by just a hair. I think is only had DDR2 though. So go for the x700 it's just as fast, has more memory, and is probably going to be cheaper. But if you can spend $50 more go for an x800GTO. Significant performance gain over the 9800 and x700

What PS does the X800 series require? Is it all the same for the PRO/GTO/XT? and is it the same as the X700 series?

I originally thought it used as much power as the 6800 series, as it has around the same specs as the 6800's, but now im not sure.

I use a HIS X800GTO IceQ II version. It dosent need any extra power (extra power plug)and I have used it on 250watt PS comps before.
Power requirements seem to depend on amount of transistors.
For example,
X700 is 120million(least power)
X800GTO 160
7600GT 177(effecient for Nvidia and SM3.0)
6800 222
7800 302
X1800XT 321 million (power hog)

To me the X700 seems like it needs the least power and X1800 the most. Its just the X700 is 128 bit memory and the X800GTO is 256(double the bandwidth).

The X800's are now around $100 at Newegg, pretty hard to beat.

X700 and X800 are both PS VS 2.0 so it doesn't matter which one in terms of technology, it's just the same. But Nvidia is all PS VS 3.0, just that it has a lot of buggy graphics "shimmering problems" and slow AA modes, and as of Catalyst 6.5, our ATI cards can do advanced AA modes that Nvidia cards are not as good in performance, that and Anisotropic Filtering. ATI drivers have performance modes that are quite good, and an AI Mode to again get some more speed.

I have to say I'm really quite satisfied with my Sapphire X800 GTO2 VIVO DUAL DVI ;)

I DO have AGP though...so will that make a difference to the power amounts? Like I remember reading that the PCIe X800xl doesnt need a power molex connection...but the AGP does.

Thanks for the help :)
