HD5770 Crossfire or HD4850 Crossfire?
 

HD5850/70 is out of the question as they are to long to be used in my case...
So should I stick with the HD4850 and just get another for Crossfire, or get 2x HD5770s and Crossfire em'.

I bought a board so I could use crossfire, I also bought a PSU that can easily handle crossfire.... but ended up not getting another HD4850 to pair up in anticipation of the HD5 series and the fact that the HD4850 is plenty powerful for my needs. So, lets see what you all would do in my situation!

To give you an idea of how close it is in my case, and to why I cant go with the HD5850/70...

HD4850's are going well cheap now so i'd just get another & crossfire it with the one you have. Will save you a packet over shelling out on 2x HD5770's.
Maybe get the 2 HD5770's sometime next year when their abit cheaper & theres some DX11 games out.

You could spend $100.00 for another 4850 and get some great performance from the two in CF or spend $320.00 and get better. I would spend the $100.00. I had an HD 4850 CF setup and it ran great . Played games flawlessly.

Well, I would much rather prefer something that matches my current HD4850... I think I will just have to go HD5770. So Expect to see my HD4850 up for sale in the coming weeks. The only downside is anyone who buys it, would need to replace the HSF... the fan module is going out of it. :banghead: I could send it in for warranty, as it has a 3 year warranty on it, but there is no telling what card would come back... (A crap clocker or a good one).

As for getting a new case, I like this one... plus, I modded a Faraday Cage into it. ;-p

So, here is a refined question-
Performance wise, which would be better? 2x HD4850 or 2x HD5770?

5770's are nearly as fast as 4870's...give them better drivers and they will be better in my view. :)

Best bang for buck these days are the 4870's as a pair of them will give good frame rates in any game you want. :)

I think it would be close but the 5770s would be better (+ they are 1 gig of mem)

BUT would be able to tell a dif? Probably no.

I know the 5870 is long but I think the 5850 is shorter.

I run a pair of 4770s and really like them.(seems like Crossfire finally works well)

HD5750s with 1GB of fast GDDR5 look like a great value as well.

Is power consumption relevant to your decision (both annual $ and noise)? Everyones priorities are different; but I would sell your old card while it still has value, replace it with ONE 5770... and if you REALLY needed performance, drop in another.

95% of the time you will probably be quite happy with the 5770 unless you upgrade to a hi-res screen.

5770's match a 4870 for performance - look at wizzards review, its so close they might as well be dead equal.

two of them will be faster than two 4850's, as well as DX11 and far lower power use at idle.


Hell, just get the one for now - a single 5770 will still be faster than your single 4850, and you can buy a better case or something in the meantime :P

Guys i am for about a week now with a g force 6200 turbocache...
No money coming anytime soon (at least not before 1st november) and i am desperate cos i cant play cod4 even @640 480 with all settings low...:banghead:

I say get a new case, you can get real cheap ones with okay airflow these days.

Sunbeam Transformers are really cheap if you want a full tower case!

I reckon 2x 5770's would be the way to go, just for dx11, never mind the performance gains. Pity about the case, ironically i've got an matx case and mine fits in just fine (with about 2 inches to spare) people only ever seem to have problems with full sized ones due to the hard drives being lower!

Yeah, this HDD cage folds out... I would remove it, but its the only HDD cage in the case and the fact that this steel is 1.8mm Magnesium Coated Japanese Cold Rolled Steel... cutting it would be a real pain in the rear.

If you have removeable hdd cage you can use something like this http://www.thermaltake.com/product/C...cage/a2309.asp and can put 5850/5870

I'm in the same boat right now as I already have a 4850 (which is awesome btw), but over the past few weeks before the 5000 series cards were released I was thinking about picking up a single 4870 or 4890 1GB model to replace the 4850. I was looking for a bit more performance (just to stay that little bit further ahead), but I just wasn't really sure if it was the right time with the 5k cards on the horizon.

Now that they are out I'm thinking VERY strongly about instead of going with the 5850 like I had originally thought to do prior to release, I may go with a single 5770 instead as it's still a nice bump in performance compared to my single 4850. I get the 1GB memory which is nice as well, and since the cards are very early on I may get even better performance in the long run by going with the 5770.

The other thing that is 90% of the reason I'm thinking of going with the 5770 over anything else is.....power consumption! I spend a great deal of thought and time trying to find the best possible combination of components and settings to ensure I'm using the least possible amount of power (stable) with every component. The 5770 will use much less than the 4870/90 I was going to get and likewise with the 4850 I have now.

It will also cut down a little on the noise which really isn't a problem, but is a nice bonus to have anyway. It can also help me with cooling (also not even remotely a problem) for my system as it's a dual slot exhaust cooler instead of a single slot (bought the 4850 very early on reference design) which can help save even more power even if it's just barely.

I imagine I'll be selling my single Visiontek 4850 512Mb card in the next week or two, I'm just trying to figure out the smartest price and where to sell it (here or local).

Either way you go it's an awesome setup, just depends on your money situation and priorities. I'm not concerned with benchmarking or super extreme outright performance. More important to me is power consumption and flexibility.

Well for those already having a 4850,go for a 2nd one if u can find it anywhere near 90 euros(110$?)
I got 2 of these and i played every game in fullhd!!!
If u cant fine a 2nd one in affordable price then sell it and get 2 5770s.But what i wanna point is that 2 4850s ARE REALLY POWERFUL provided u have a decent prossecor!!!
