So it was apparently good that I held on to my 4850s instead of grabbing the 5850s. 6850s here I come. :D

zithe Jul 28, 2010 07:05 PM

Oh dude. I'll actually have money this time around.

ZenZimZaliben Jul 28, 2010 07:07 PM

The 5k series was an awesome line of cards. ATI did such a good job with them. With the 6k series they can up the power usage a little and still be way under Nvidia specs and get big gains on performance. Was smart to start with an efficient card and build up from there. Vs. Starting with a very inefficient card.

If they don't drop the prices of the 58XX series soon, these are going to be expensive.

Not a lot is known about the Southern Islands family of products. The SI family will offer higher performance compared to currently available ATI Radeon HD 5000 “Evergreen” line, but will hardly be considerably more advanced in terms of feature-set. It is rumoured that designers of the new GPUs concentrated mostly on improving efficiency, but not on building something completely new from scratch, which is why certain building blocks of the new Sothern Islands family will be inherited from the current Evergreen line.
I don't like the sound of that....:shadedshu

At least they're being honest rather than blasting out their own speculation. :P

so you dont like that they make it even more efficient then the 5000 series and will receive a little speed pump  (bare in mind that SI will be 6700,6600 series)

KainXS Jul 28, 2010 07:41 PM

need more info, don't know enough, everything is rumors so far on the actual architecture.

On the other hand it may be less then you are expecting. All the R&D was already done on the 5K series, so hopefully that will end up saving ATI money to build these cards. Whether they pass that on to us though...

Please use the ATI HD6000 Thread.

Meh... this thread served it's purpose. Just a quick news blurb about the 6k series. If I don't see a similar thread on the first page I figure it's ok to post. Blah Blah Search Function, blah blah.

erocker Jul 28, 2010 10:04 PM

Use this thread please.

Well I am hardcore rooting for ATI. I am invested in both ATI/Nvidia and would love to see ATI get up to Nvidia levels. I think if ATI keeps this up they can catch up and maybe even surpass Nvidia stock.

I am wondering though if ATI will try to capitalize a little more on the 5x series with something like the 5890? Or something along the same lines as the old school XTX series.

Jizzler Jul 28, 2010 10:29 PM

First price cut around tax return time perhaps?

/me does a little dance.

Skipped my 'big' upgrade last year so I'm ready to go whole hog this time around.

TheMailMan78 Jul 28, 2010 10:47 PM

Well I hope I can score a 5850 for cheap then. I need some crossfire love.

Super XP Jul 28, 2010 10:49 PM

NVIDIA more than shot themselves in the foot. It's going to take at least 2 years to catch up and clean up the mess, but by then hopefully ATI will gain massive market share.

ZenZimZaliben Jul 28, 2010 10:49 PM

+!1 ^ I want another 5870 with a nice price reduction.

I think you are 100% on target.

MadClown Jul 28, 2010 10:56 PM

My 4870 is still going strong, October wont be a painful wait.

finndrummer Jul 28, 2010 11:00 PM

From what i have heard about the the HD6000 i decided to buy a second 5870 from a friend for really cheap (180 euro) i think those cards wont have any performance advantage over a 5870 crossfire. Also Don't know if they will add 3D support for those pseudo-next gen cards.

ZenZimZaliben Jul 28, 2010 11:08 PM

Hopefully the For Sale section will have some good deals on them. I will be keeping my eyes on that section come October.

I agree. I don't think a single "HD 6870 or whatever" will beat out 5870's in CrossFire. I would expect 10% - 20% better performance than the current top single GPU card (GTX 480) in games/applications. It's in their best business strategy not to go over the top with performance. That said, no one really knows. All that there is currently is rumors based on rumors.

Ready to let go of those 5850's already? Awesome cards for the money especially in xfire.
