New AMD build for friend, advice please,
Hi there,
Looking for some advice for a new build for a friend, could do with some recommendations, I am looking to keep costs lower, and help on getting this bellow £600 is much appreciated. Case is already sourced so no problems there PSU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/850w-...-year-warranty CD/DVD R http://www.scan.co.uk/products/samsu...sata-black-oem HDD http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-s...ache-89-ms-ncq Motherboard http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...-sata-raid-atx CPU http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-p...l-cache-retail Memory http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-(...-7-8-7-20-165v Gfx Card http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-x...-dl-dvi-i-hdmi Including Carriage to where I live this is £646.32 What do people recommend cutting to get this down to £600 max (as it's for a friend) If possible I would prefer to use the same supplier due to shipping to the island I live on. Advice appreciated. |
Going to overclock the system or not? And also, is your friend going to continue to upgrade the system or he is just going to leave it as it is?How long does he want to use this system for? One last question: he is going to go crossfire?

He will wish to upgrade the system overtime and get a good standard use out of it, however his current system is a P4 3ghz with 2gig of ram and god know what for a gfx card, his budget is limited. Crossfire, I do not think so, but I have the same mobo and am crossfiring with it fine right now :) |
Righto, I would suggest some thing different to save him some money:
Drop the mobo down to 880G, for example http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=41303 He wouldnt need all the pcie lanes if he is not crossfiring Grab a 6870 instead, slightly cheaper and still deliver just as much performance £36 for a super cooler is good, and we all know that coolers keep processor happy: http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...roductId=39421 Edit: also get a psu with about 550-650w, he doesnt need all that power if he is not going crossfire and overclocking. psu Good ol 212+ is also nice http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Compo...roductId=39577 |
Cheers mate,
Swapped psu to your suggestion thanks also swapped the GFX card to this http://www.scan.co.uk/products/1gb-s...dvi-d-hdmi-mdp Swapped the Mobo to this one http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...board-graphics Looking for the cooler but can't find the AMD compatable Venomous X on scan, I guess I could use another supplier but costs of shipping is also a problem Carriage to where I live is around £20 at least. Edit: Added the Coolermaster Hyper 212 This has bought it down to Total £596.70 Including Carriage and Scansure (as it's not my build thought I'd pay £15 for the insurance) |
At least get a mobo with some USB3, http://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigab...sata-raid-matx
Get the F3 HDD rather than the EcoGreen version, provides more performance for only a few pennies more http://www.scan.co.uk/products/ss1tb...-89-ms-ncq-oem |

I would wait for another 3 hours or so for other people to take a look, The products I suggested are what I would go for, but it might not be the best around. USB3 is not of any use now, but in 1 years time, who knows? |
I need to wait to be given the cash before ordering any, cheers, Saved the basket, and true I went with USB3 because I could afford it, so I guess its worth it.

Its funny how a HD 6870 is cheaper then a HD 5850
and the HD 6870 is faster. Proven over and over. Good cards ATI has, and that HD 6870 is going to please who ever is going to use it for gaming. |
