Seagate Ships 1 Million Momentus XT Solid State Hybrid Drives
 

Seagate has shipped its one millionth solid state hybrid drive for laptop PCs after launching the product – Momentus XT – in spring 2010. Major computer makers including Alienware, ASUS, Dell, Sony and Toshiba now offer laptops powered by the 2.5-inch drive that blends performance rivaling solid state drives with the enormous capacity and much lower cost of hard disk drives.

The Momentus XT solid state hybrid drive, a 7200RPM drive with up to 500GB of capacity, boots up to 50 percent faster than traditional 5400RPM drives and sets new benchmarks for real-world system performance for laptops and gaming systems. Seagate's Adaptive Memory technology is key to the drive's speed, optimizing its performance by moving frequently used information into the 4GB of onboard solid state memory for faster bootup and application access.

"Seagate's shipment of its one millionth Momentus XT drive is just the beginning of a bright future for solid state hybrid drives," said John Rydning, research director at IDC. "Fast, capacious, and economical hybrid HDD and NAND flash storage solutions like the Momentus XT drive will be found in roughly 25 percent of all new PCs shipped in 2015."

The problem with today's high-performance SSDs for mobile computing is that they cost as much as 10 times more than hard disk drives of the same capacity, with the price of a 250GB SSD outstripping even the cost of many laptop PCs. Most consumers and system builders are unwilling or unable to pay the high price for the greater speed of SSDs. The Momentus XT drive delivers SSD-like speed at a fraction of the cost and more capacity options.

"With Momentus XT hybrid drives, laptop users don't have to make trade-offs when buying a system based on speed, cost or capacity," said Rocky Pimentel, Seagate executive vice president, chief sales and marketing officer. "We're delighted that the Momentus XT drive has been enthusiastically received in the marketplace and look forward to introducing the next generation of the product, which will give consumers an even better, faster computing experience, before the year is out."

I've had one in my laptop since March, and it was a nice boost over the 640GB 5400RPM Toshiba drive in my notebook. I wish the cache were larger, as if I don't restart my laptop in a while, the OS won't boot as fast as it does with frequent restarts.

I've been pondering one of these for a while, but the reviews on newegg confuse me too much.

I like mine. It's a noticable difference coming from a 5400rpm drive & totally worth it. If you're coming from 7200rpm drive the only thing that is faster is the boot-up otherwise performance is about the same & IMO not worth it.

If anything else I'd think it'd be the other way around with one major benefit being that this doesn't require two separate pieces of hardware.

Now, how is it heat wise.. that's what I want to know.. Should I go to ssd or just grab this to my tablet pc

Go SSD, Just make sure you get on that will meet your needs.

I won't buy a seagate drive again, but props for them on making a new style drive and selling 1 million of them.

It's good to see the technology all be slowly is gaining market share.

1 million drive is not that much you know. Its a start, but not that much.

If it's so successful, then why don't they further improve it and also add hybrid tech to desktop drives. I just don't get it why can't they make hybrid Barracuda drives...

1 million is a drop in the bucket, for sure, but it's a start and I think if they included the technology on say a 3tb drive people would be more interested.

I agree with your sentiment. The SSD market has developed significantly in the last year... Seagate should be marketing an IMPROVED Momentus XT not just spinning their existing and old drives. They obviously have a lot of old stock they need to shift...

I have never seen a more trouble some harddrive when it comes to my dying, just Google. Whining, stop motion, klicking and everything with the current firmware it got better but it is still bad.
They used their customers as test rabbit's and had some fine struggle with their time schedule for firmware update, and don't say it comes from their new invention the hard drive part was just worse.

I agree, I'd like to see a desktop 3.5" drive in the 1TB+ size with a 16GB SSD cache.

It sucks that everyone is poo-pooing Seagate now. Not to long ago they used to be respected.

I was intrigued enough to buy one and have not regretted it. It is comparable to a raptor and superior in some cases.

Yep same here. I have had several Seagate drives and still use an old PATA in a nostalgic system and have never had one to date take a crap on me. I ether purchase Seagate or Western Digital (which I believe is the same now).

Have been thinking about picking up one of these but the price point has kept me from it as well as SSD's.

Just had two Seagate 2TB drives die on me in the past month. I'm not going to stop using them though because I had a WD 1.5TB die too. I still think they are both good brands.
