Please suggest old but good games which run on 10 year old laptop

System specs for this laptop are in my signature below.:ohwell:

[At the moment that's my only available pc... My desktop in system specs is at home (I'm at the summer place) and my laptop in system specs is out of action waiting to get an 8800M GTX I ordered].

I have Simcities 4 Deluxe (released 2003) and Gothic (released 2001) -- (both on Steam) which run well... I played Simcities for quite a lot of hours but haven't yet started Gothic.

Since I have a month and a half remaining using this laptop before moving back home, I thought of asking for your suggestions.

My preferred genres are strategy/simulation like Simcities, Civilization, Anno 1404, The Settlers series and RPG / light shooters like Oblivion, Fallout3 and Fallout New Vegas (which is why I got Gothic apart from it being bundled with Arcania).

I also love games like Limbo (2D adventure). Unfortunately this laptop doesn't meet the specs for Limbo.

So, which good old games would you suggest for me?
Thanks! :respect:

What is your laptops specs? Also starcraft would be a choice too

BarbaricSoul Sep 1, 2011 07:40 PM

mechwarrior4 mercenaries, it's available for free DL at www.mektek.net

With an Intel GMA GPU, gaming is a bit difficult :(
Strategy: Age of empires I and II, in case of II with the Conquerors expansion, Empire Earth I and *maybe* Empire Earth II at minimum,
Simulation: Need for speed Hot pursuit, maybe Sims 1, maybe some olde Flight simulator.

FPS: Counter strike 1.6 (not source), Doom, Quake

I see SPY! Sep 1, 2011 07:58 PM

Let me check my oldies' drawer:

-Jagged Alliance 2;
-Fallout Tactics;
-Master of Olympus: Zeus (love it!);
-Age of Empires 1 and 2;
-Gangsters 2;
-Caesar 3 (very similar to Zeus, but this one was made first).

And that should keep you busy for a while :D

Maybe Duke Nukem Forever? ;)

The original Fallout. DO IT!

If you like games involving sailing, pirates and blowing things up, I'd suggest Sea Dogs.

If you like space simulators, then I suggest Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.

Space strategy, either Master of Orion II or Imperium Galactica II.

Then there's the free indie space exploration game Strange Adventures in Infite Space and its sequel Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space.

(snip) maybe Sims 1, maybe some olde Flight simulator.

This graphics chip isn't that bad -- it runs Sims 2 fine - I just won't bother with it because I already played it for a long time and then played Sims 3 (on other pc) afterwards for an equally long time.

I'm keeping high hopes, especially since as I found out in this thread I can't get Simcities to run on the work pc (a quad with 2GB and integrated chip), whereas the game runs well here on this piece of junk :)

Keep the suggestions coming guys, I think I'll get half-life...

Mailman, I might try the first Fallout but the third person view makes gameplay kinda too complicated for me to relax...

And Fallout 2! DO EEEEEETT!

And the old adventure classics are great, Monkey Island 1-3, Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, Toonstruck.. Mind you these games will take a lot of your time if you intend to play them without walkthroughs. Also Jedi Knight, Diablo 1/2 and Heroes of Might and Magic 3.

Oh, and The Longest Journey. I usually tell people if they are to play just ONE game in their lifetime, they should play that game.

EDIT: BTW, if you are to play Fallout 1/2, install patches and fanmade patches. They will improve everything.

Oh, and Deus Ex with the Shifter mod.

Lol I had a Intel GMA based laptop which I couldn't remember the rest of specs and it could barely run Need for speed hot pursuit @ 5 FPS, maybe the RAM and CPU play more than the GPU there :D

Then if it runs sims2 it's more powerful than I first though :)

I forgotten: Halo: Combat Evolved :)

Fourstaff Sep 1, 2011 08:30 PM

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 if you want. Original Halo is good too, it gets my vote. Original Counterstrike, if you can get your friends to play with you. Red Alert 2 if you are into those, some Civ stuff.

Red_Machine Sep 1, 2011 08:35 PM

I doubt she'd be able to run Halo on the GMA. I tried it on a similarly-specced machine rsporting SiS integrated graphics and it failed. No transparencies and a shitton of lag.

DannibusX Sep 1, 2011 08:37 PM

Baldur's Gate series and Icewind Dale for RPG's. Diablo and Diablo 2 as well as Starcraft and Brood War.

Yukikaze Sep 1, 2011 09:21 PM

1) Jagged Alliance 2 with the 1.13 mod. It can be played for months.
2) The Ur-Quan Masters (the Star Control 2 opensource version). Amazing game still and it takes a looooong time to finish (unless you google up everything).
3) The old X-COM games.

douglatins Sep 1, 2011 09:33 PM

Baldurs gate 2, diablo 2, i dunno i was Tu Yung

happita Sep 1, 2011 09:36 PM

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the original Deus Ex. Now THAT is an amazing game for it's time. Also, if you want to try something different, new, and refreshing, Thief: The Dark Project and Thief 2. Both games are first person sneakers. I'm waiting for Eidos to announce Thief 4 or whatever it's going to be called soon since they finished releasing Deus Ex: HR.
edit: woops, nevermind, either Frick had Deus Ex concealed or I'm going blind :laugh:

erixx Sep 1, 2011 10:24 PM

Then we have todays launched open beta for TANK ACE, a World of Tanks clone specifically made for low end trash computers. Zeus! Does it look horrible! :)

I forgot about Thief though. :(

BP, play Thief 1 and 2. DO EEEEEETT!

Jetster Sep 2, 2011 10:19 AM

Worms

LifeOnMars Sep 2, 2011 10:28 AM

Clive Barkers "Undying".

Excellent game which will run uber smooth on that setup. I should know, that's a very similar config to when I played it maxed out :)

Black Panther Sep 2, 2011 07:52 PM

Originally I didn't know where to look,

But now I can't decide which to choose! :)

I liked Portal 2, Settlers, Oblivion and Fallout 3... so perhaps I could get the games which are similar in Genre?

I was thinking about choosing Half Life, it can't be bad if it's one of the most popular games ever!
And also World of Goo I played it on a friend's pc once, it was nice..

(I played a bit of Gothic yesterday but though I like the story and the graphics are awesome for this little machine I'm using, I can't stand not using the LMB to fight. :twitch: )

NdMk2o1o Sep 2, 2011 08:06 PM

Angry birds is a good time killer and should run fine on that as I run it ok on a cheapo Chinese Android tablet, no Nvidia tegra here!!, though I must admit it just feels better on AQndroid (have it on my HTC also) than on a pc due to touchscreen.
