Maximum PC review of game engines

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/fea..._face?page=0,0

really good stuff here, they go into what all the big graphics engines can do then their bread and butter and weaknesses. They also cover middleware engines like havok and physx

Article invalid

you cannot compare engines which SDK/Mod tools have released to ones which had not

Unreleased SDK: IDTech 5 , Frostbite 2

There articles are done with only end-user experience - not scientifically backed.

Thats not true its completely valid. Unreleased or not open source or not doesnt matter its what the engine can physically accomplish. and they made a note of mentioning what the modifications to engines like source/quake add or take away. I think it was very indepth and regardless of how wrong you think it is or what they may have left out it has alot more then you can easily get on the net. Its a good compiled list.

i also call bs

the missed some of the biggest draw backs on various engines they also left out the

4A tech engine used in Metro 2033 which is still currently one of the best game engines in terms of CPU usage also no mention of the X Ray engine.

to give a rough Idea 4A engine for Metro 2033 is multithreaded in a way it schedules tasks directly something no other game engine does  and its performance on 360 allowed 3000 tasks per 30ms Frame. so thats 3000 indivdiual tasks at once PC was of course much higher depending on cpu but in general its why Metro 2033's performance is nearly agnostic, its multi threading is a different approach for a change ;) i would think Maximum PC would in a game engine roundup include the one engine taking a slightly different approach, which has all the bells and whistles and was first to the market in terms of Direct Compute, AND built in AAA aka FXAA / MLAA, along with Sub surface scattering for skin.

they also forgot about Gamebryos glaring CPU Shadow rendering problem, among other things,

Its an OVERVIEW of game engines, but i see nothing else worthwhile, besides a tiny bit of good info and a worthless strength / weakness comparison,

not attacking you Solaris, mostly maxium pc for posting an UNfinished article. They didnt even really try to do a good job this time around.

As i said, it's someone with it's own reviewer-grade experience, the article has no professional backing of any company/institution
