AMD A8-3870K Overclocked to 5.87 GHz CPU, 1.32 GHz GPU in Suicide-Run

A Japanese overclocker achieved a 96% CPU clock speed increase and 121% GPU clock speed increase during a "suicide-run" using a retail AMD A8-3870K Black Edition processor. The feat was conducted by OverclockWorks, a tech-community and store for Japanese overclockers. A CPU clock speed of 5,875 MHz was achieved using a base clock speed of 125 MHz, and multiplier of 47.0x, and a brutal core voltage of 1.872V. The integrated Radeon HD 6550D GPU was overclocked to 1,327 MHz from its default 600 MHz. The overclocker claimed that his feat is "probably the world's best", though, like some of the most unstable suicide-runs, the system was too unstable to run benchmarks. Apart from the A8-3870K, the test-bench consisted of ASUS F1A75-V Pro motherboard, G.Skill RipjawsZ memory, and a certain SilverStone PSU.

Is AMD starting to rip of Intels product names :wtf:

eidairaman1 Dec 30, 2011 10:49 AM

the APU designation has been this way for awhile so no not really copying anything

NC37 Dec 30, 2011 10:50 AM

3870 was once an ATI product. Now an AMD APU. Intel is just finally catching up in the numbers.

Isn't that much of a feat really when you remember these APUs are based off the Athlons. People were clocking those well too. But combined with the GPU on die, it gets a nod.

Which Athlon Gen are you talking about K7, K7.5, K8, K10, K10.5?

AMD A8-3870K whats with the K though seem like a rip off to me.

eidairaman1 Dec 30, 2011 10:54 AM

does it matter what its named tbh?

Fastest K7 was at 3.0 GHz with a 1.8VCore

Well not really its just weird out of all the letters in the alphabet AMD picks to use K

Arch for Amd has been K5, K6, K7, K8, K10, K10.5

K stands for BLACK. Someone explained this long ago that "K" code means black in i don't know which programming language.
AMD had Black Edition processors for ages...

K10, before that they were FX, now FX is back

CMYK (HD Color Profile) Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black (last letter since B already means Blue)

Thanks for the info didnt know that, AMD had Black Edition processors for ages yer thats true but never seen a K stamped on the end of any of there CPUs

But K10 is a CPU codename, not the actual name. And yes, it was the CMYK and K stands for black.

i just had a point to make below and then possibly another point about the K meaning in programming here

You must really think it's weird that so many things begin with i.

DannibusX Dec 30, 2011 11:24 AM

Thread begins and a news post that someone achieved a 96% overclock on an AMD processor.

Immediately changes to AMD "stealing" the naming scheme from Intel.

This thread is now about pizza. K stands for pineapple on the pizza ordering scheme. Intel ripped off Dominos.

Prior to the Athlon, AMD used the K names as actual names (k6, k6II etc)

Anyway, back on topic, this is quite a feat, considering the non-extreme motherboard used.

I'm really tempted to get one to replace my aging 2nd rig , but want to see more regular overclocks to get an idea what i can expect on air cooling or a simple water loop.

pantherx12 Dec 30, 2011 11:52 AM

So how long will it be til I can 24/7 at these clocks?

K actually stands for "Key" (color tone), and is usually a neutral black.:toast:

I still can't believe how much of a fail bulldozer has become, considering that the Fusion APUs are pretty decent chips.

AthlonX2 Dec 30, 2011 12:24 PM

Two different architecures

oc is cool but without stability power is in vain :nutkick:

nINJAkECIL Dec 30, 2011 12:44 PM

AMD APU has been a decent overclocker. Very much like bulldozer, only more forgiving in terms of power consumption. Many user oc'ed their APU to 4-4,2ghz using air cooler, and 4,5-4,7ghz using water.
The only scary thing was that it needs vcore somewhere between 1,45-1,6v to achieve that speed, depending on the system used. Though certainly it can't compete with SB @4ghz.
Still,pretty good nonetheless.

No that just stupid :slap: :nutkick:

I was just making a point Intel started using K in this generation of CPUs and AMD just randomly thought they would to, Its just like if a older generation like your granddad started saying dude to be hip.

qubit Dec 30, 2011 01:24 PM

I like that term "suicide run" lol. You can just imagine it posting a trillion gigglehurtz, a quick boot into Windows and the thing explodes into a ball of fire!
