Need a network storage solution for under 500 that I can access remotely
 

I believe I have everything covered in the title.

I have been looking at some cloud storage and NAS server "solutions" from newegg.

I really don't know what I am doing but I know what I need. I need around 4tb of storage that can be accessible from the internet. Thats really all there is to it. It's going to be used to store Adobe CS5 files and other large project files. Does it really matter what storage solution I choose?

NAS servers are expensive, esp after you buy all the disk to put in them.
Are you talking 4 tb of raid 5 space, or just 4tb of storage? I would recommend enterprise class drives for longer life.
You might look into something like Freenas http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeNAS

They only offer longer warranty, hardly longer life. As basically all NAS's use software RAID the enterprise drives offer no value.

My ix2-200 device has been up and running flawlessly for over 2 years now and i love it.

Just checked, the drives have 18,000 hours on them, Although i got an email from the device saying drive 2 is about to fail, there have been zero issues with it since it was new.

Total: $470 shipped. Put whatever flavor of Windows you have laying around on it, or use a free Linux solution, your choice.

However, I'd suggest spending $100 more for another hard drive and putting them in RAID-5 instead of RAID-0, for redundancy.

I like your style. I will probably just build a proper server for this. I need to update my workstation from 1055t to an oc'd 2600k anyways.

Well I setup my computer with apache and built a simple page with my files in the directory.

Now I have concerns over security. I have setup the page with authentication. Beyond that, I don't know what to do. Would a VPN be more secure?

Also, I am not the only one that needs access to this, so I don't think a VPN will work well.

I'd get rid of Apache and just set up a Filezilla FTP server, assuming you are running Windows. Apache is meant for providing web pages, it isn't that great for providing access to files. An FTP server is designed with nothing but file access in mind. Most are also very easy to configure different users with different access rights.

Awesome, I might just do both just to mess around with web publishing.
