I wish they would have made a SP sequel to the first 2 games.

This and this. Massively dissapointing game, and I wasn't even that hyped.

Darkleoco Jul 31, 2012 08:53 PM

Might have to give this a try if its f2p

douglatins Jul 31, 2012 08:55 PM

That sucks.

johnnyfiive Jul 31, 2012 09:26 PM

I stopped playing when I hit 30 (I took my time enjoying the story). The game got very, very stale very fast. I knew at that point it was pretty much going F2P.

Actually no, you can play all the way to 50 on the Free model. You links above display the benefits of going with a subscription.

Yes, my mistake, i clicked the play now and it took me to the free trial page which is limited to lvl 15.

NinkobEi Jul 31, 2012 10:47 PM

Oh good, another f2p I can download, play for a few hours then delete. I was running out!

Kreij Aug 1, 2012 01:57 AM

I liked this ...

"Players want flexibility and choice. The subscription-only model presented a major barrier for a lot of people who wanted to become part of The Old Republic universe," said Matthew Bromberg, GM of BioWare Austin.
So why are other games that use the subscription only model doing well? Hmmm ....

Theres really only 2 that are using it exclusively now that I can think of. And one is making it by, the other, well it's WoW and obviously it's doing extremely well. The problem with a sub model is, when you pick your MMO thats it, there really isn't room for another MMO to even try, because most people don't want to spend $30, $45, or $60 a month as new MMO's come out and they want to play more. So basically top dog holds the sub model, everyone in it's wake that wants to live almost has to run f2p, that or die.

xenocide Aug 1, 2012 04:35 AM

The Sub-Model works, but it takes a huge toll on developers. Look at Rift, it has held strong over the past year because Trion has worked really hard to make sure there is a content patch monthly, that makes the game worth the continual cost. WoW has just become a bloated cash cow by comparison. TSW is P2P and it's very good, looks like they are following the Rift model of monthly content, which is really the only way the Sub-Model can work--assuming the game isn't WoW.

1Kurgan1 Aug 1, 2012 05:25 AM

Yep thats the only other sub game I could think of beyond WoW, RIFT. And they have to work like crazy to just constantly patch in content, and even then I think they are holding like 500k subs or so. So nothing too crazy, not bad, but lots of work for that base.

Frick Aug 1, 2012 06:36 AM

EVE has a sub fee as well right? Maybe not fair to compare that to others though, very different game.

Yes, EVE is sub-based and doing well. But it is a totally different niche, with a completely different player mindset.

Yep, but yeah it's different enough from WoW where it isn't really seen as competitive with it. I really wish I could get into EVE, tried, but just not for me.

What have you tried game play wise, and how long did you stick around?

Its not dead. This is just EA being EA. Impatient bastards. No MMO has been an overnight hit at launch. Not even WoW. EA is moronic and forgets MMO aren't instant cash grabs. The game is good despite BW's initial stumble with the hero engine, which they are removing for their own engine as it goes. Its the vocal numbnut 5% that went out and blasted the game all over the net while they suckled Blizz's Panda bottle, that held up subs.

But it looks like it will be better than LOTRO. Meaning you will be able to experience the game, just no endgame and limited on the rest. So literally, it will be KOTOR3 since you can play the entire TOR story without grouping/etc. You will want to play all the storylines too since they all link up and crossover in some ways. Although, some are better than others for sure.

Bjorn_Of_Iceland Aug 1, 2012 08:07 AM

Going to try this out for 30 minutes, give my cash and stuff to other players for free, then delete it lol. So when will Terra Online become f2p? XD. Then again, I wont let my harddrive touch a single bit from that korean grind fest game.

Not much, I jsut can't do flight games much, especially space. Never having a true up or down just is disorienting to me.

I agree, I actually enjoyed TOR even when I quit I was still having fun. I only stopped because friends had stopped playing.

I knew this was going to happen. it's only a matter of time before EVE and WoW go F2P
