Which cpu runs the hottest? P4, Core 2 Duo or the i7?

anyone/

PlanetCyborg May 23, 2009 04:08 AM

I7 no question!!! useless cpu:shadedshu

ShadowFold May 23, 2009 04:08 AM

I'd say the P4 and i7 tie. i7 runs WAY to hot. Core2's run relatively cool in my experience.

RadeonX2 May 23, 2009 04:11 AM

the i7 runs way hotter than P4 and Core2 but they're designed to take that much heat

it has to be Hyperthreading.

freaksavior May 23, 2009 04:11 AM

i7 4.2 @ 65c idle

LittleLizard May 23, 2009 04:13 AM

i7 and p4. my p4 on my old pc idles at 70, load 90.

yogurt_21 May 23, 2009 04:15 AM

google is your freind and that question is far to general. we'd need to know specific models. but heres the list of all the models for each platform with their tdp's.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

max's out at 115w on ee 775

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

max's out at 150w on ee yorkfied

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...icroprocessors

all are 130w

but as I said individual models will vary the question is far too general.

I was wondering if these guys saying the i7 ran the hottest even had any idea what they were talking about. None of them has an i7 system. That said, I know for sure that i7 is a cool running chip that hits super high MHz on relatively little voltage. Don't speak out of your shadowy-areas, guys. The P4 is THE hottest chip. Core 2 (Duos) get pretty damn hot, but not as much as the P4.

And as mentioned above, not only are the newer, smaller construction dies (45nm vs 65nm) able to handle more heat, they also run cooler too.

dont get me wrong, p4's run hot, but i would say a pd runs hotter than a p4, maybe a tad bit cooler than i7, but considering the power of the i7 then no it doesn't run hot. p4 would be hottest.

hey, question, can your i7 920 @ 4.2 pass the linpack challenge? (click on the ultra-stable link in my sig for info)

ShadowFold May 23, 2009 04:24 AM

I honestly thought my dads 940 was gonna catch fire one time.. It was running at 112c under water, we were going for a 4.7ghz

So, would a P4 cpu heat sink work on the i7?

Looking to upgrade my MOBO and planning to use the same cpu cooler if possible.

That wont cool an i7. Even at stock settings, the stock cooler can see upto 80+C, so that gimpy little thing will just melt.

Nope absolutely not if you're gonna get an i7 system it'll cost you $600 so why skimp on the cooler? Plus the cheap i7s are all boxed and bring their own cooler.

Well the stock cooler is supposedly liquid cooled according to sony. It's a very quiet cooler and has a good size heatsink on the upper compartment with a huge fan blowing through it. My 3.4 P4 HT is hitting about 50-55c idle.

You have to build an entirely new system to use an i7.

Mussels May 23, 2009 04:41 AM

i7 - P4 - core 2 quad - core 2 duo - in order of heat at stock clocks, stock cooling.

i7 -c2q - c2d - p4 in order of performance.

vbx May 23, 2009 04:45 AM

Ok thanks guys, Guess I'm going to the core 2 duo route. Cheaper and cooler. Good for what I need it for.

ShadowFold May 23, 2009 04:46 AM

Phenom II's are better for the price. 130$ for the 720BE is a STEAL.

if all you're doing is gaming/regular PC usage, then core 2 duo is the best choice. only look at i7 if you're trying to feed monster video card setups (SLI/crossfire) or you do 3d rendering or video encoding.

PlanetCyborg May 24, 2009 01:06 AM

i have do agree with Shodowfold 720BE is AWESOME cpu:rockout:

I thought my OC'd 9770 was a monster at encoding till I encoded the same video file on a friends i7 rig.:respect: Lets just say I'm going to be parting out my rig and going the i7 route.
Everything will be up for sale, when I get back home.

FordGT90Concept May 24, 2009 04:41 AM

My Core i7 920 with the stock HSF runs loaded between 80C and 85C. I would not recommend buying a Core i7 without buying at least a Scythe Mugen-2 (cheapest of the good HSFs at $40). That brought the loaded temp down to 55C.

P4s ran hot too. They are practically the same architecture so they are hot for the same reasons. Hyperthreading is what really takes the temps to the next level.

Core 2 Duo/Quad run warm but quite a bit under P4/Core i7. The quads are quite about hotter than the duos though.
