Kingston Technology Makes SSD Upgrade Affordable and Easy

Kingston Technology today announced the release of the SSDNow V Series solid-state drive (SSD) upgrade bundles. Targeted specifically for mass-market consumers and small and medium businesses, these bundles are first to try offering a low-cost solution for upgrading existing desktop and notebook computers with the advantages of solid-state technology. The NAND flash storage components are available in 64 GB and 128 GB capacities, and come with the widespread 2.5-inch form factor. They use SATA 3.0 Gbps interface. Moreover, the read and write speeds the drives achieve sustained go up to 100 MB/sec. read and 80 MB/sec. write. Two bundles are offered, the one being for desktop computers and the other for laptops. Along with the desktop bundle you'll receive a 2.5-inch SSD drive, a CD with Acronis True Image cloning software, 3.5-inch mounting brackets, and SATA data and power cable extenders. With the laptop bundle Kingston will sell you a 2.5-inch solid-state drive, and add a 2.5-inch USB SATA external enclosure in case you want your old HDD to continue working inside the laptop, and use the new SSD as external storage media. Of course, the new SSDs are being showcased at the moment at COMPUTEX 2009. They are backed with a three-year warranty, 24/7 tech support and are now shipping to retail channels.

Not bad! But I want to see bigger drops!!

Oooo... I like this.

£160, seems good. But Still alot of money. Were closing in on the 1GB / £1 section.

I think i'd still buy HDs over SSDs, the gain doesn't warrant the price, atm.

techjunkie Jun 3, 2009 05:09 PM

still didnt hit the sweet spot with the pricing. The seagate 7200.12 can deliver 100MB/s reads aswell and comes with a price tag of 99$ for 1TB. Way better deal imo

Mussels Jun 3, 2009 05:36 PM

they might not have hit the sweet spot with hte pricing, but theyre sure getting there.

techjunkie: my samsung F1's can do 115MB/s. Neither my samsungs nor your seagates can do 0.1ms access times like an SSD, try comparing them with something relevant.

Not yet... But I do like the bundles they are selling with the drives. It definitely helps to distinguish themselves from the other SSD manufacturers/sellers.

*looks forward to running two SNV125-S2BDs in RAID0 for under $300*

Between the desktop and notebook bundles, I'd go with the notebook bundle.... no brainer. For the same price you get the external caddy where as with the desktop you only get your molex to serial power adapter and a serial cable, both of which I have more than I already need.

Nice to see drops, but when I could pick up 1.5TB or 64GB, the choice just seems to obvious.

You have to think of it as a performance upgrade; it's not for the storage space, it's for its speed and reliability. (and quiet)

And less power. My laptop battery life went up an HOUR after switching to two SSDs over two 7200RPM 2.5's.

see the other recent news posts, theres one about a new Jmicron controller that can supposedly halve the price of SSD's :)

mk_ln Jun 11, 2009 12:35 AM

any one know what controller they use?

I like the extras that it comes with though, how much for them alone. This is an all right bundle, not to be sneezed at for sure.

They're already listed on Newegg. 64GBs are 138 for Desktop kit vs 148 for Notebook kit.
