What are your plans for Windows 7 ?

Microsoft's new OS is in the final stages before launch. Are you ready to make the switch?

btarunr Jul 15, 2009 11:54 AM

I'm happy with what build 7100 is showing me, and I'm hearing that it's getting better with each new build. Will switch.

Ill wait and see if the consensus is its the greatest thing since sliced bread i might check it out sooner rather than later.

mdm-adph Jul 15, 2009 02:10 PM

Do you want a lot of people to be painfully honest?

I'll use it as soon as I can get it for free.

Otherwise, I'll stick with XP.

WhiteLotus Jul 15, 2009 02:24 PM

I ordered it last night, using the 7100 build, and well... I just can't fault it. At all.

Frick Jul 15, 2009 02:28 PM

My goal is to get an actual NEW computer sometime next year, and then it will be equipped with Win7.

But until then, I'll stick to Linux, or possibly Win XP.

EviLZeD Jul 15, 2009 02:52 PM

Ive preordered it just because its so cheap for a retail copy I haven't even tried it. I havent got any issues at all with vista currently hopefully everythings compatible still.

Mussels Jul 15, 2009 03:11 PM

i've been using it since 7000, and noticed a few bugs.

7100 had issues with network share permissions randomly dying (only on some systems, and a format would fix it)

7127 has a funny bug where upload speeds are shown as double what they really are (i can upload 250MB/s on a gigabit connection, lol)

7264 i think, has data corruption issues

thing is, theres really only one problem or so with each build - once MS pick one without any bugs like this, we'll have a great OS. I'm using 7127 cause its only a bug, not a critical fault - i can live with its flaw.

Overall the OS is faultless. you have the usual rage that things you liked are moved somewhere else, or hidden... but after a few months you go back to vista and you miss how 7 did it.

Raovac Jul 15, 2009 03:18 PM

:D I always wait a year after it is released, then most of the bugs are fixed.

 i'll try to remember that cheers
i've not got it yet or downloaded the rc as someone suggested ,simply because i haven't upgraded the pc yet (will do soon) and this old dinasaur bsod's at the drop of a hat so i really doubt it would work on this ,is it drm'd like vista?
reason i ask is i don't like the idea of upgrading stuff within my new build just to be told by bill gates i need to purchase another os

Mussels Jul 15, 2009 03:31 PM

i checked, its 7264 that has the data corruption. editing post.

7000 and 7100 were the only two released to the public, and they were good. you kinda expect bugs in the leaked ones, as they werent made official for good reason - if they were perfect, they'd be RTM ;)

alexp999 Jul 15, 2009 03:32 PM

Got mine pre-ordered. Cant wait. :D

Hopefully the RTM will come out soon and I can get it going before October.

ShadowFold Jul 15, 2009 05:54 PM

I tried the RC and hated it. But I love build 7600, I don't care what it is but they fixed all the BS I hated about 7100 and all the versions before it so.

So yea, I will be buying it because build 7600 is just the best experience I've ever had with an OS in my life. It's simple, the interface is awesome, it's fast(faster than vista, found 7100 to be about the same), has drivers for everything out of the box and just works better than all previous versions. I really hope this hurts apple. I wanna see people loving the PC again. Because the more people that have PC's, the more people that might buy games and boosting PC game sales would be awesome. Maybe PC gamers wont be treated like dogs anymore.

Inioch Jul 15, 2009 06:15 PM

Already changed, since XP was giving me trouble. Using the RC for now. Skipped Vista since it annoyed me to no end.

But please enlighten me, what are the major differences between 7600 and 7100? I hear people praising the 7600 and it makes me think about changing. I know a clean install is preferred, but it can be upgraded in place?

tonyd223 Jul 15, 2009 06:29 PM

Vista works better with more ram - I'm rocking 8GB and there is a definite difference in the feel over the 4GB I was using previously. However, Windows 7 uses that ram so much better - so prob 7 after service pack 1...

hat Jul 15, 2009 06:59 PM

I'm happy with XP. I don't want to spend $130 and days reinstalling/reconfiguring everything just to upgrate to Windows 7. The only thing I would gain from it is DX10 support... woohoo... DX10 ran ok-ish on my 9800GT, which was more awesome than the card I have now, and didn't look any better than DX9 except for a few, very minor details.

I'll probably stay with XP until game developers stop making games in DX9 flavor. Then I'll get a new OS with whatever upgrade I am going with at the time

erocker Jul 15, 2009 07:01 PM

I just want a classic start menu feature with Windows 7, either way I will be buying it once released for one of my computers. I will retain Vista x64 for the other.

WhiteLotus Jul 15, 2009 07:01 PM

I thought i was "happy" to stay with XP as well, but then i tried it. I was gobsmacked.

AsRock Jul 15, 2009 07:11 PM

I boot Vista Win7 and XP and still use XP x64 a load more so it be a waste of money to buy it

Jizzler Jul 15, 2009 07:12 PM

At home and work we'll be going with Windows 7 Professional, that's about 45 computers total.

I said after Vista's release that I would never deploy it in the office, and I've kept with that so far. Thankfully Windows 7 isn't that bad, or we'd be using XP for another 2-4 years :D

FatForester Jul 15, 2009 07:12 PM

I've tried out the RC and really enjoy it. Although Vista was a good OS to me, 7 is what Vista should have been from the beginning. Since the upgrade version of 7 makes you install and activate XP / Vista prior to a clean install, I'm probably going to wait and see what deals IEEE has at my school when it comes out.

js01 Jul 15, 2009 07:17 PM

I'd totally do away with xp but I still get better fps in xp, maybe once drivers get better the performance will go up. Other then that it's great.

It does have a classic start menu feature, lol.

Right click desktop, left click personalise. Scoll to bottom of themes and youll see the Windows Classic Theme next to the Windows Basic Theme.

Does that relate to it's looks or the start menu function? Maybe the version I'm trying doesn't have that feature.
