Heat has not been an issue in my laptop with the XT, pretty much the same as any 7200rpm drive. They do use a bit more power so battery life may be decreased a little.

I used double sided 3M auto tape to mount a harddrive to the bottom of the case. It holds well, lifts it up enough so no shorts & a little air can go under it too.

That one looks pretty good too. The adjustable fan speed is a nice feature, you don't see that too much on others. It also has side (rear) air inlet. Just avoid the ones that don't have the side air...

You've already tried everything you can at home by swapping everything around. I'd try to RMA it next. If they don't accept it then sell the one since it works great with stock cooling.
