Troubleshooting
I remember putting things together to test systems and putting the bare MB on a non-conductive surface (Cardboard box) and firing it up.

I expect you are having Ram problems, Download the latest version of Memtest 86+ (http://www.memtest.org) and test one stick at a time for at least a full cycle and then try the same stick in another...
