does wireless n increase distance and improve signal quality?

My buddy moved from the second floor of his place to the basement. Their wireless wrt54g is on the main floor of the house. Now his wireless signal is not as good. He's wondering if he buys a wireless n router to use, would the signal quality increase. I know the speed will, but wasnt sure if its hit by impedance and limited in strength the same way. He says his pc is pretty much right below the router, but his laptop is good signal on his desk.

FYI: He's tried putting ddwrt or tomato on the router to boost signal, but its not compatible with the memory or something
