I think there just was no such thing when the HD5000s were originally released, thus them not including them with from the start.
Well that's why Sapphire made the 5770 Flex, which has the adapters with it and doesn't actually need active adapters, but yeah I totally agree. We paid a buckload for the likes of 5870s. I can't see why they couldn't throw in a $5 (that's probably how much it's actually worth) for free in the box.
