afaik, nVidia did some modifications in the memory controller for the GTX 550 Ti, in such a way that it has three 64bit memory controllers, and each controller is controlling 2 32bit memory chips. 4 of the memory chips are 128MB in size while the remaining 2 are 256MB in size totaling 1024MB of memory at 192bit. The Raster Operators (ROP) are also tied to the memory chips, and each chip has 4 ROPs in it so in simple terms:
Note: GTX 550 Ti has 6 memory chips
Memory Controller 1 - 64bit - 128MB 32bit memory w/4 ROPs + 128MB 32bit memory w/4 ROPs
Memory Controller 2 - 64bit - 128MB 32bit memory w/4 ROPs + 128MB 32bit memory w/4 ROPs
Memory Controller 3 - 64bit - 256MB 32bit memory w/4 ROPs + 256MB 32bit memory w/4 ROPs
Total of - 192bit 1024MB memory w/ 24ROPs
In terms of memory controller, its really different from GTS 450 since it had to balance the load on the odd memory configuration, and thats up to the drivers.
correct me if i miss somethin or some errors
