We (as a group of friends) recommended one to get the iPhone 4S because we know that he will not be bothered to rearrange the innards of the phone, and then recommended the iPad 2 to another because the form factor is best for his parents (and Asus Transformer was not out yet and he have to fly back within a few days). After playing with the UX31, supposedly the best ultrabook out there, everyone was so unimpressed even the Mac hater grudgingly recommended the MBA11" over the UX31 based on the price we can get for both.

My only mac product, the old iPod 80Gb classic has served me faithfully for over 4 years and it is still going strong. Sure it crashes every now and then, and the battery life is not as good as before, but I have come to appreciate their build quality. Its not the best, but its a good cut above the average competitor, where build quality can be questionable even among "trusted brands" (HP and Dell, both of you can go to hell).

Edit: Oh, and Apple has been so good over the past few years with popularising novelties that they have effectively turned the entire tech community into their marketing machine, eagerly waiting for the next toy to be popularised and then pretending to be uninterested while waiting for some other "good" companies (like Google or Asus) to make a direct competitor.
The UX31 has good specs but the build quality isn't that great... I prefer by far the Lenovo. While the iPad 2 is nice, but I can't justify 519 CAD $ when the Galaxy Tab is 399C$ and I prefer it. Compared to the Galaxy Nexus, I find the iPhone 4S to pale in comparison. For some reason I don't like my sister's SGSII 4.5", but the GN is just simply amazing.

Yea Apple is ahead of the curve, for example with the first with MBA type computer by far, and the first to have a decent resolution on a cell phone. They are above the average, but not above MY average. I can understand some of the appeal, but BY FAR the majority of the purchases is because of the perception it is simply and "problem-free" and "à la mode" . When you see those line ups and you talk to people, they thing the iPhone 4S is the fastest and has the best screen and is awesome because it's cool. Actually most think anything Apple is the best screen and the simplest. I know that in both Montreal and Toronto, the Middle Class and up buy Apple products for all the wrong reasons including the simple fact that it is "à la mode" and the majority buyers of anything like like that really. If you don't appeal to that crowd then you won't be as successful.

Yes some people do buy the for the right reasons and I respect that, but it is a TINY minority
