cant say for sure, like almost all devices out there in the world - they wont work without a power source.
If the screen comes on before dying then it could be down to many reasons but mainly either bad battery or faulty hardware - faulty hardware could be anything thats hooked upto the PCB or even the screen.
Ive worked on laptops where the screens lights up when powered on for a few seconds then *bloop* and nothing at all...usually remedied by either switching out the LCD panel or the inverter.
