I had a Matrox Mystique 8mb (expandable to 16mb!) "3D Accelerator" back in the day in my old P200 MMX machine. I remember buying a Riva TNT 16mb PCI (yeah, PCI!!!) to replace it; those were the days. I always remember hacking drivers to get Quake 2 to run in OpenGL on it; various things like lighting wouldn't work so it was kind of a cheat at the same time.
After I left home I was able to start affording other GFX cards. Had an AthlonXP machine with a Ti4600, that was then replaced with a 9700PRO, then X800Pro, then X800XT (processor upgrades and motherboard swaps were made in progress as well).
Have had many other cards in the years following but those early days with the Mystique being my first "3d accelerator" were awesome.
