The start menu in a folder-like structure is excellent
if you take care of it and sort your shit properly; take a look at Gnome 2/XFCE/LXDE/KDE's menu for excellent examples of well-taken-care-of-menus.
And secondly, if search is the future take me back to the CLI, it was much better at searching than any search bar shit ever was or ever will be.
