Let me tell you what my most memorable
gift was. It was Christmas and I was 6½, and really wanted a bike. I hadn't got one, and as you can imagine, my first bike was a big event. But what did I get? A terrible homemade toy crane! WHAT! It was the sort of thing that any 3 year old boy would love. But I was 6½! And mortified! And sad. How could my dad do that to me? Was he scrooge personified? Was this serious? Was it a joke? Was I being punished? Oh the shame... not only was a toy crane totally uninteresting... what would my friends think!
Anyway, my mum saved a little every week, and by my 7th birthday she had saved enough to buy a second hand bike. I was delighted!
Times were tough in 70s Britain. Power cuts, miners strikes, rail strikes, water shortages. Homemade toy cranes. No bikes.
Metro 2033 is my preferred choice. If that's gone already, then Shogun.
