If you are planning a trip, get into the 2 year cycle (known as "opposition"), this is the point where the Earth and Mars are closest together, that way you will only have 55,000,000Km to travel, on the bright side, with current technology it is estimated you could get there in a year, of course the downside to that is that with that current technology it's unlikely you will ever get back, just not enough fuel left in the can, so you would be left having to live with these storms for the rest of your life!

Current propulsion tech get you there in about 6 months IIRc and the "new" VASIMR systems in the works should be able to do it in like 40 days IIRC. I don't feel like Googling, too lazy/stoned
