These boards were designed for AIO PCs and such that have cooling built into the chassis. It's also why they are so thin, as such designs have space restriants, and a full backplate is too large.

I haven't talked to Gigabyte since around Christmas, but I still pay attention to them, for sure. Here's a video they made about these boards:
