A m8 of mine just got an HD 2900XT 512mb, but his PSU doesnt have an 8pin PCI-E (and I believe this will effect his chances of overclocking wont it?)

At the moment hes using 2x 6pin PCI-E plugs to power the card, is this ok atm?

Does anyone know where to get hold of some 8pin PCI-E adapters in the UK?

Only affects overdrive, the two extra pins need to be connected to ground in order to unlock overdrive.

What you can do for a permanant fix is simply solder a wire across one of the regular grounds to the extra two. No adapter needed and overdrive is enabled.

Just make one: Take a dead psu pull 2 of the black pins from the 20/24 pin ...pull 2 of the ground lines from the 6pin wire the loose pins to each and plug them in..
if you need a pic of the working unit post back ... add it anyway

They are just ground wires, as confirmed by my Toughpower 750's 8 pin. I overclocked mine with 2 6 pin's just fine using ATI tool.

A quick question. If I was to cut 4 pins off a 6 pin adapter (molex to 6pin PCI-E) and make them both 'ground', plug the molex end into a spare molex on my PSU and the 2 'grounded' pins (from the cut down 6pin) into the 2 spare holes on the card, would that work aswell?

However you do it does not matter. Simply connect the two grounds to enable overdrive. This is pointless to spend money just to enable overdrive as there has been no difference in overclocking with or without the extra 2 pins.

If you would like I could order the two plugs, figure shipping to you, and just be a middleman in the process. There are several american sites that sell them, however pointless they may be.

$7.95 Each plus shipping http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=186&products_id=21721
You pick the heatshrink and sleeve colors. $20.50 Shipped to me, Probably another $10/$15 Sent to you. Thats almost 20 Euro for two adapters. Is it really worth overclocking in overdrive?
