Opera Software today launched Opera 9.6, the newest version of Opera’s award-winning Web browser. Opera 9.6 enhances the performance and flexibility of Opera’s built-in e-mail client, while adding new features to Opera’s free browser-synchronization service, Opera Link. Opera 9.6 is available as a free download from Opera.com


What’s new in Opera 9.6

• Expanded Opera Link

Opera lets you take your favorite search engines and the browser history you enter wherever you go. Opera Link also synchronizes notes taken in your Opera browser, your bookmarks, Speed Dial and personal bar.

• Optimized Opera Mail

Stuck with a slow connection? Our built-in e-mail client, Opera Mail, now includes “low-bandwidth mode” to retrieve mails even faster when bandwidth is limited.

• Prioritized e-mail

Opera Mail has two new ways to manage e-mail conversations. Keep an eye on important threads and contacts by following them, or ignore less important threads and contacts with a single click.

• Increased speed:

Opera 9.6 improves the quick responsiveness and page loading of Opera 9.5.

• Previewed feeds

Look before you feed. Now you can see an RSS feed’s content before subscribing to it or even bookmarking it. Opera gives you a clean, multi-column preview for each RSS feed so you know what to expect before you subscribe.

• Improved fluency

Opera is pleased to add support for Indonesian, Ukrainian, Estonian, Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil languages.

I like Opera, but compared to FF, IE and even GC (even though its beta) it really doesnt offer me much on the way of new. I do like this new version with increased speeds and preview feeds.

Nice, I'm glad Opera continues to improve...I have used it primarily for years, IE second. I've used GC and FF, for me Opera works perfectly, and has been issue free for my needs.

Definately looking forward to the new version!

Well I hate to beat this drum again but, you mean "FF IE and GC dont bring anything new to the table... "not the other way around.

Opera had these before any other browser:
tabed browsing, css, integrated popup blocker, browsing security.

It also has now:
integrated bookmark sync, quickdial, download & torrent manager.
Yes I know FF has all those via plugin but guess where they emulate it from and who did it first.

On the dark side,

1.Opera's torrent manager has rudimentary customization;
2.It is NOT open source;
3.No 3rd party plugins (but it does suport widgets)

Sorry for sounding fanboyish, I use FF sometimes as well, (with quickdial, noscript, download manager, foxmark sync, etc etc plugins) that took a while to configure and update sometimes.

While with Opera I have it all there contingent from 1st install and working properly.

if you go to tools > preferences > advanced > downloads. you can change the .torrent extension to open with another program such as utorrent.

Also you can type in browser "opera:config" in the address bar and edit it and quite a few other nice tweaks. Seems faster to me. Whatever

spoken like true old-school . ive used opera since at least '98 and its always been the fastest. They are like the linux of web browsing: they never widespread get credit for making new features, they are the fastest, and possibly the least compatible.

Google Chrome is just a Mozilla shell, with some stolen elements from Firefox and Opera.

I'll take Opera over Chrome any day.

Well, they're not open source, so it wouldn't be like Linux. They would be more like a nix based OS, like OS X. Just as other browsers rip off Opera, other OSes tend to rip off OS X.

That being said, I still prefer FF. Not because it's better in any way, but because I have tweaked exactly how I like it.

^^ It's Opera's biggest flaw indeed, being proprietary.

On the other hand I am fond of FF myself for how maleable it is. And lately it's also surprisingly snappy and just as secure as Opera.

Another interesting concept is what GC brings to the table, meaning integrated sandboxed operations. To achieve that I used to run my browser X or Y in conjuncture with Sandboxie.
