SiS Announces Chipset Support for Intel Atom, Features in DELL Optiplex FX160
SiS today announced the SiSM671/968/307DV chipset supporting the latest Intel Atom 230 and series CPU has been adopted by Dell to develop the Thin-Client PC OptiPlex FX160 project. With low power consumption and without fan characteristic of SiS chipsets, the new launched Dell OptiPlex FX160 is designed for business users to experience the noiseless environment and to make a contribute to energy saving and carbon reduction.
As the photo shown below, the DELL OptiPlex FX160 has the quite exquisite outlook. The space-saving design is only one eighth of the regular ATX chassis with SiSM671-based chipset of Mini-iTX motherboard inside. On account of superiority of meshed aluminum material case, the DELL OptiPlex FX160 not only integrates all the modern PC functions thoroughly but also features small-sized, light-weighted, high radiation; easy-fixing and power-saving. We can foresee the cost-efficient and full functional DELL OptiPlex FX160 paired with Intel Atom series processors and DDR2 memory definitely becomes the tendency in the IT world. ![]() The DELL OptiPlex FX160 Thin-Client PC, combining with the SiSM671/968/307DV chipset, is well-equipped with various functions. It supports DDR2-667 memory with memory size of up to 4GB. The SiS Mirage 3 Graphics is integrated in the SiSM671 to deliver high display quality of 2D and 3D images. The SiS968 Southbridge and SiS307DV Video Bridge are paired with the SiSM671 Northbridge Chipset to provide the ultimate performance of DELL OptiPlex FX160 Thin-client PC. That supports PCI Express x1 interface, also provides 2 Serial ATA2 high-speed ports for HDD and SSD devices to accelerate the data transmission speed up to 3Gb/s, by equipping six USB2.0 ports, the SiS968 enables the DELL OptiPlex FX160 Thin-Client PC need of connecting with multiple peripheral devices. With SiS968 High Definition Audio and SiS307DV DVI output features,Dell OptiPlex FX160 makes users experience the truly High definition Multimedia content playback. Together with SiS968 Gigabit Ethernet funtion, it features high-speed internet access for seamless web browsing. Adopting SiSM671-based chipsets solution, the Dell OptiPlex FX160 not only fulfills the baseline of Cooperator’s demand but also provides the expanding upgrade capability for the coming usage in option. According to SiS, to fulfill the market and customers’ demand, SiSM671/968/307DV will continue to support at least by the end of year 2011. Source: SiS |

SIS 671 is an old chipset and have been around for a while. I'm actually surprised they haven't come up with anything new in all this time and are still squeezing everything they can out of it. Still, we as consumers need chipmakers like SiS to stick around otherwise soon its gonna be Intel for Intel and AMd for AMD.

The chipset Intel paired with their Atom CPU is outdated as well, it only supports 2GB of RAM max, at least the SiS chipset supports 4GB, I would not be surprised if the SiS IGP video performance craps all over Intel's current offering...
The Asus eeeBox with the dual core Atom chip and this SiS chipset would be quite good for a cheap low power thin client PC. |

What's the power consumption like on this chipset?

It's just a slightly tweaked variant of the same chipset that ran pre-Core 2 LGA775 processors. Power consumption was lower than that of Intel chipsets back then, but not very significantly.

So from a battery life standpoint, would this be the better Atom chipset?

I'd say yes, but at a depleted performance level. You're giving the Atom worse IGP and MCH.

sis made good shipsets thru the athlonXP era to bad they kinda got out of the chipset market, ofcorse intel and nvidia strongarming board makers to not offer overclocking boards based on their chipsets lead to them never taking a large hold in the benching market.
personaly I will wait for the via nano based netbooks, atom is ASS for netbook type apps, would be good in a portable media player or phone type device but its per is pretty ass for genral use apps. |
