HIS hd 4870 very hot

I got a new HIS HD4870 , but this thing runs VERY hot (70°C ) , but after gaming it hardly goes up (i think the fan speeds up to maintain the temp ).

On my old HD 3870 i have a Zalman GV1000 Cooler , would it be worth fitting this to the HD 4870 ???
Or should i just AS5 the stock cooler and speed up the fan ????

You have to use catalyst 8.10 or higher. In the overdrive tab tick the key to unlock it, then set the fan to the desired speed.

It's been posted dozens of times about the temps of Hd4k cards, this is very normal.
If you want like Erocker said, set the fan speeds in CCC if you want a simple fix.

No worries my Hd4850 ran at around 105c stock and never had an issue, I turned the fan speeds up to 50% and its still quiet and I run around 40c idle and 55c load.

i say increase the fan speed like erocker sed, or better yet mount that Zalman cooler on the 4870, it should fit but check for compatibility first. Mine 4870 just arrived and i'll be putting aftermarket cooler on it as well. It doesnt run as hot as yours (tops at about 63c) but still i think that putting coolers on these kind a cards is a must especially if u gonna overclock. just my opinion though.

It looks like the card has some sort of modified bios judging by the low power 2d clocks it's showing. Reinstalling the drivers may help. Here's a tutorial on doing it right: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=52502 Unfortunately that may not work due to the bios you are using. In that case there's a more involved way (not too involved) of doing it here: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=64267

whoa that screen shot shows your 4870 is ridiculously underclocked. And I don't see how that can be 8.11... since there should be a 3rd gauge on the right with the fan speed. Im confused.

I'd go with erocker and uninstall the drivers and reinstall them. Something must have gone wrong

70C means nothing to a video card. It can still run with temps up to 110C. But u can still do what erocker said.

When idle or at 2d mode the video card underclocks your speeds by like 1/3 of it's speed. When in 3d it busts it up to the orginal clock.

@To the thread: Something must be wrong with ur drivers. Uninstall and reinstall might fix it.

the clocks are that speed , but as soon as i start something graphical they jump up to proper speeds , then when i stop they drop back down. (the fan runs at 2% when idle )
I've uninstalled , and reinstalled tonight (drivercleaner in save mode aswell) , but this made no difference

He's a mod for a long time, so he nos what he's doing. He's just saying even in 2d the clocks are still lower then normal.

Deffinitely give RivaTuner a try first. If that is unsucessful, then perhaps try some new bios'.

you can change out the cooler for aftermarket cooling, but keep in mind. the gpu itself is pretty easy to keep cool. i'm pretty sure a zalman vf900 would cool the gpu, and i bet a vf700 would keep the gpu cool aswell. but the problem with the 4870's isn't the gpu, its the voltage regs. standard ramsinks just wont cut it on those super hot vregs.

i run a hr03-gt on my 4870, even with all these sinks, i blackscreen crash on furmark bench. i ended up having to put a 92mm fan over my vreg area, and now with all the sinks and a fan it runs nice and cool. and still quieter than the factory leaf-blower.

very strange, this is a new bios with the thermal mode just like the sapphire but with a better powerplay.

All you need is a better fan profile, I have modded just that and left everything the same, try flashing it and let me know.

Tell me something...just out of curiosity does your screen flicker when the memory clock changes from 2d to 3d ?

Unless there's a better bios i should be using , any way thanks again
