SVCHOST = Service Host

A lot of services are just DLLs. The service hosts are the executables managing those services. So, if you want to lessen the number of SVCHOSTs running, disable some services...

And just to be certain, search your computer for instances of SVCHOST. If it is not in System or a Service Pack dir, there's a good chance your computer has been infected. AFAIK, it should never run under a user name.

service host is required for some services to run. Most of them is from sound, probably 80% of them.

That's what I thought, could be a virus. I'd do a quick scan if I were you.

are you running user account........shut it off
are you running windows indexing.........shut it off
Windows side bar........there ya go, shut it off
Firewall, automatic updates, and other windows security options are all Svchosts!

Thats just a couple of examples of Svchosts man

Oh yea, and Thanks Lucas!!!

Just remove your sound card, disable Windows sound service and see how many are left.

Yeah if there is svchost under your username in taskmanager under processes, remove it.
Easy is way is to go into msconfig and remove it from startup and then restart and see if your system still goes.

I think it should as the ones under system are the important ones which keep your OS running.
