Gigabyte Unveils Radeon HD 4870 1GB Equipped with DisplayPort

Gigabyte today, has released a new graphics card based on the ATI Radeon HD 4870 graphics processor (GPU), in a non-reference design. While sporting a thin and light appearance, the card retains high-grade electrical components such as digital PWM circuitry the reference PCB sports. The prominent features of the card include a DisplayPort connector alongside an HDMI port, both on the PCB. The card features 1 GB of GDDR5 memory made by Qimonda, across a 256-bit wide bus.

Being non-reference and Gigabyte, it's expected to have a blue coloured PCB. The GPU is cooled by a Zalman VF830 cooler, which features on several of today's graphics cards by Gigabyte. The memory is left to be cooled under its air-flow. The VRM area gets a heatsink of its own. The card is powered by two 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors. It uses reference clock speeds of 750 MHz for the GPU and 900 MHz (effective 3600 MT/s) for the memory. It is yet to be priced.

well displayport is a good idea on a high end card. helps it maintain its usefulness over time.

That cooler looks kinda funky - why is the power cord reaching across the whole card?

That's where the fan header is on all of the 4850's I've seen. I'm guessing it was a thousand times easier to leave it where it was and run a wire, than to change the printing on the board

I'm sure this will be a kick ass card, like all of the Gigabyte cards I've owned. After the few review samples I've gotten from Gigabyte, they're definitely my first choice when buying a new graphics card these days

And I'm guessing Gigabyte's GamerHud will let us crank the voltage on this card with a simple mouse click

Its not like the RAM even runs warm enough to require cooling (Most of the time, except for overvolted GDDR3; i.e. my quimonda).

very Clean Board, some may complain that it doesnt have Ramsinks equipped but i think they are only really needed if your overclocking, and besides the stock TIM they use for the Ram sucks and that is for any company, 1 Part AS Epoxy + 1 Part AS5 Compound FTW!!! (50/50 Mix).

The card I have been waiting for! Is it just the cooling solution that is non reference, or is the power circuitry non reference too?

With an Accelero S1 and the Turbo Module installed, it should be very cool, quiet and overclockable.

I really hope it has Gamer HUD too for voltage adjustments via software.

/Edit/ From what I can see the power circuitry is the same, and the only difference between this and the reference PCB are some extra bits by the Display Port. This card also only has Gamer HUD Lite, so it may not be the massive overclocker worth waiting for:
