Best FREE Antivirus that balances...

Performance (lightweight, easy on the system resources) and Performance (Catches stuff that needs to be caught, lets harmless stuff go)

What are your nominations?

I'm using Avira Antivir for years now, pretty satisfied with it. Altough it causes the system to boot like 10-20 seconds longer... Otherwise you won't notice its there.

I like AVAST, It's very easy to disable temporally if you want to play a game.
I used to use AVG but had a problem disableing it.

Otherwise I'd rate them about equal for the free ones.

Avast 4.8 is very nice. Right click the icon and disable when you want it off. I've never had a problem with it interfering with any other applications.

+1 for Avast. I've never even had to turn it off, and I've had trials of the paid ones (Norton, Kaspersky, Nod32) after using Avast and none of them have ever found a thing. Twice I've had Avast warn me of impending doom as well, and both times I was being foolish. Why pay for the same protection I can get for free?

+1 for antivir. AVG sucks, only has a 83% detection rate.

+1 Avast, it rocks; AVG 8 is annoying as hell, especially since I'm not admin on this PC so I can't set what apps are blocked or not.
Comodo firewall is also quite good, although you'd want to take the time to set it up, otherwise it is message after message after message... It can do a full system scan as well though, and I had it detect stuff that Avast didnt see!
Threatfire is also a nice piece of software to have around, good for Zero Day attacks, and it usually detects stuff before Avast. It isn't as flexible in options and where you want to scan though, but it doesn't interfere with other AVs or firewalls.

Forgot to mention, I had Avast and Comodo Firewall both running on my Dell laptop (PIII-850, 512 MB of RAM) and it only made it start 10 - 20 seconds slower and gave only a little extra system lag running XP Pro.
Scale that up to a modern PC and its almost no lag.

I've used Avast for years, great AV program...really with more modern PC's and newer versions of the Avast client, I've noticed little to no bogging caused by the scanner in comparison to on older versions and PC's where to game with less slowdowns disabling Avast was the way to go...I don't worry about it anymore a modern dual core/DDR2 pc shouldn't really suffer too much from it...and at least speaking for the rigs I use and have built for others that is the case, little to no impact.

AVG 8.0 works well after you have set it up. Avast is also very good.

Has saved me from so many Spyware, malware, trojans and virus that I just don't care if I get one anymore, they are a joke HA!

In fact scan with it right now and it might find something to kill for ya.
