Maybe, however what GTX295 doesn't have is ATI Stream which kind of tightens the competition. Also, in some games, the performance gap between the two isn't as big on high res unless if you really like Dead Space.

But I do admit, $450 is a strange number...hope they go lower.

You never know...there will always be a chance that a developer can optimize a bit further. So far, some developers are actually starting to notice the benefits since most teams are dying to maximize their game engine's detail, so the tables could turn if GDDR5 gets more popular in the mainstream.

Yes but newegg usually has stuff below the official MSRP. So now that the Ati official price is $450 I wouldn't be surprised if you could get one off the egg for $425 or even $400 soon.

I think arguing over stream/CUDA is irrelevant for most users who are interested in graphics/games performance and arent using their machines for math/encoding specialist activities.

But there is a lot of rethinking going with that, AMD is saying that CUDA will die.

Then on the other hand, it could be marketing BS. But AMD partners like Jules World and Midway agree too, as well as additional developers outside of the partnership.

I agree with them, as OpenCL is definitely going to replace CUDA lol. But ATI Stream should be a good optimization for games though...

LOL.

OpenCL or CUDA or ATI Steam are just development environments/code interfaces for math stuff. If OpenCL becomes more popular than CUDA then nVidia will just provide OpenCL libraries.

I think arguing over stream/CUDA/OpenCL is irrelevant for most users who are interested in graphics/games performance and arent using their machines for math/encoding specialist activities.

What resolution is your friend running and are you running? I bet his is a lot larger.

I don't think that some people realize that these cards are not just mean to run games super fast they are also meant to play games at huge resolutions. Thats where the 4870x2 shines.

I would definitely say that the gtx 295 will beat the 4870x2 outright but I wouldn't say it "destroys" it just yet.

Agreed, the only huge a** gap that GTX 295 has against the HD 4870 X2 is Dead Space, which is a 150fps advantage for some reason. Other benchmarks that are know to the GTX 295's liking, however, are too close to consider unless if you really love folding. Even so, that is at low resolutions, go high like 1920x1200 and the HD 4870X2 meets or beats the GTX 295.

When you achive above 60 FPS it is smooth game play 60 more wont make to much difference.
You first have to find Game that needs more than a 4870 which is hard to find maybe Crysis but because is more optimized to NV. Crossfire has more efficiency on the games that supports, on other games can happen 4870x2 to work as 4870 single. Either way in time when more demanding games will come out the difference will be obvious. And 4870x2 it is not much faster than GTX 280. And in this business is very important who has top performer it sells whole line.

Read reviews. It helps when deciding what card to buy: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...5,2107-11.html

Clearly the gtx 295 is a better card than the 4870x2. But you must realize the price performance ratio is slightly better with the 4870x2 simply because they lowered prices on the 4870x2 simultaneously to the gtx 295 launch.

The bottom line is if you cannot afford a gtx 295 in your computer budget you don't need to talk down about it.

You must find the card thats right for you. gtx 295 is performing better now with immature drivers even. So once better drivers come out, its margin will increase in its favor.

But you have to ask yourself is it worth the upgrade from what you currently have?

Is it worth it to you for the price/performance ratio.... and do you want the king of the hill card for "seeing what its like at the time".

I have the money so I bought one. I might get another if I feel its worth it just to see how quad SLI is improving. I like the way ATi is improving scaling too.

People should be buying the HD4870x2. They are 450$ free shipping, and you can find them used for 400$ or less.

GTX295 prices aren't going to drop anytime soon. I can put my money on that

The king of the hill never does until it finds more competition. Which needs to be soon since competition drives the market.

Definately.

Realize that AMD is very smart. They don't really care about the crown. More people are going to buy the 4870x2's = more money

When AMD does come out with something new, whether it's the RV570, or what, it's going to hit Nvidia hard in the face.
