lots of my games are randomly crashing

the list so far is:
crysis ( just after the jump out the back of the plane)
crysis warhead
left 4 dead
counter strike source (all source engine games start to load up but then get a hl2.exe has encountered a problem as decided it doesn't want to work error)
day of defeat source
insurgency mod
dead space now works
BF2 works now
Half life 2 works fine
and i still haven't gotten through all my games yet.

I did just recently install them onto a new hard drive plus a new windows install that did go stupid.

what is your setup? please fill in your sysspecs found in your user cp.

my first thoughts are to try and reinstall your graphic drivers, and then return any overclocking to stock - could be an unstable OC

then you need to check the box that allows everyone else to see what you have.

are all the error messages the same?

nope, only the source engine games have the same message. ( checked that box now)

Also, I'd just like to add that for some reason my media center edition wont upgrade from the 2002 build to the 2005 one. even though on the cd it was the 2005 version. This means i cant upgrade to media player 11 which is a tad annoying.

hmm odd. have you got anymore information on the error code? can try to find it in the event viewer.

again i would make sure that the graphic drivers are installed correctly and see if that works. Making sure to clean up after uninstalling the old ones.

The only other thought i could have looking at your specs is that the PSU is not enough, but if that were the case then the whole system would turn off.

Definatly not the PSU as i've been using it for 2 years now and no problems, even on the other hard drive. and the drivers are all working. new addition to the list BF2 now doesn't want to work.

would it be worth a shot at booting up from the install disk and repairing?

bf2 CTD's so does half life 2 but css, DoDsource and Left 4 Dead start up but dont get to splash then they get the hl2.exe has stopped working, Dead space now works, and both crysis and crysis warhead after time playing them CTD and get the same error as the hf2.exe but for crysis.exe

BF2 is now working, brilliant!
played bf2 online for 1 minute then got kicked due to punkbuster.

Well, it's global, so I would say DirectX or drivers need to be reinstalled. That or you have an unstable overclock. Either one will cause this.

Well, you said your windows install went funny, I would say that the best and cheapest course would be to reinstall it first. If that doesn't work, look to the power supply.

Im not trying to be mean or demeaning in any way with this comment.

That is a very narrow view of PC equiptment. Personally I dont care if the PSU is brand new and already fired up once, they (computer components can go bad at the drop of a hat)

Now I believe if the OS is actually running, it is VGA driver or DX related as said earlier. If my OS went in funny I would rewrite it, then start one step at a time from there.

Lastly, I had many issues with games on my HD3870 from Visiontek, it only seemed to like certain drivers...have you tried a slightly older driver like CCC8.10 or so?

Somethings wrong with ur HD then. I think u'll have to reformat to solve it, or RMA.

RMA = Return merchendice autorization. Need to get that to send it back for a replacement.

Way out in left field here, but will the games run without the Creative card installed?

start with the easy stuff..
check your temps in ati tool.
run the artifact scanner.
video card could be taking a dump..

remove the video cards and memory sticks, then put them back into the Mobo.

run a disk defrag.
and run something like Ccleaner.
to clean the registry.

get driversweeper.
download your drivers and save them somewhere easy to get to.
uninstall your display drivers in add or remove programs..
then reboot in safe mode by pressing F8 when you reboot.
go into safe mode..
then run driver sweeper..
clean "ONLY" your display drivers..
then reboot.
then reinstall your drivers.

but don't be so quick to swat aside good info.
if you come here for help and someone says your psu may be taking a dump.
don't just ignore it, or people likely won't be as willing to help..
2 years..
that makes it even more prone to failure.
and since your here asking us for help..
maybe you should listen ^^..

I wouldn't focus on the psu just yet though.
seems like something else to me.

and for gods sake..
from now on mention things like.
"it all worked until i installed my new hd a few days ago" 1st..

personally I might very well reformat in those circumstances..
