Antec Introduces New Form Factor with CP-850 Power Supply Exclusively for Antec Cases

Antec, the global leader in computer components and accessories for the gaming, PC upgrade and Do-It-Yourself markets, today announced the CP-850, a high-performance power supply featuring an entirely new form factor. Part of Antec's upcoming CP Series, the CP-850 breaks away from the standard-size PS/2 form factor -- which has been the predominant form factor for nearly 20 years -- to introduce improved airflow, better component selection and quieter operation. The CP-850 and CP Series are exclusively compatible with Antec's latest high-performance PC cases.

The increasing number of performance hardware components has created a need for high-wattage power supplies that can maintain stability at full-load. The limitations of the PS/2 form factor have led to higher costs for consumers and often wasteful energy consumption. Antec's 850-watt CP-850 presents an innovative solution that balances size, cost and quality power.

The CP-850's new "CPX" expanded form factor allows for better circuit board layout, more room between components for airflow, and a straight-through air path that takes full advantage of the large 120mm Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) fan. The CPX form factor is thus able to provide quieter, cooler operation in addition to the CP-850's preferred price-to-performance ratio.

The CP-850 is 80 PLUS-certified to be at least 80 percent efficient at a wide range of operating loads. This environmentally friendly unit also includes Universal Input and Active Power Factor Correction for more efficient power anywhere in the world. Safety protection circuitry prevents damage resulting from short circuits, over current and over voltage, for safe and reliable system operation. The CP-850 also features Advanced Hybrid Cable Management for uncluttered cable management, which improves airflow. For increased stability, the CP-850 includes four +12V output circuits to spread power evenly throughout the system. Meanwhile, two 8-pin PCI Express, two 6-pin PCI Express and nine serial ATA connectors offer flexibility. Antec's CP-850 is compliant with ATX12V v2.3 and EPS v2.91 electrical standards and holds NVIDIA SLI-ready certification.

"With hardware components becoming more and more demanding, the need for high-wattage power supplies has increased enormously. This has also led to higher energy consumption and higher prices for the consumer," said Scott Richards, senior vice president at Antec. "By breaking out of the mold of standard-size units, we were able to create a power supply that is considerably more affordable than other units in the same performance class."

The CP-850 is available at an estimated price of $149.95 through major retailers, e-tailers and distributors. The CP-850 is backed by Antec's Quality 5-Year Warranty. The CP-850 is currently compatible with some of Antec's most advanced gaming and Performance One cases, including the Twelve Hundred, P183 and P193. Huh... this is interesting. I quite like it. Too bad I have much hate for Antec power supplies. Freaking Smart Power 2 series just rubbed me the wrong way.

Entirely new, eh?

Well, the mounting holes are different. I have another one in my closet somewhere, not gutted.

Oh well, original or not, looks good. I'd buy it if I ever bought a compatible case. 9 SATA plugs FTW!

I have a compatible case. ;-)
The case is like 10 yrs old tho. hahaha.
So you are right, its not new, but it just wasn't needed at the time it was developed so companies dropped it.

I think it still looks different than the old overlooked form factor. It looks wider.
Anyway, it great that Antec has the guts to break the ice, and hopefully get other companies to do a bit of innovation. (Though, it's kinda good that almost every PSU fits in almost any case nowadays...)

I never found out. But like Flyordie pointed out, it's quite old. Probably has some industrial spec name.

The last case I saw that could support them were the Chieftec/Antec tower cases.

Remove the bracket for a standard-size PS and the four mounting holes line up.

Hmm... perhaps. I measured it out, if you move the fan on mine to the edge, you'd have about an inch and a half of space for the cables and modular plugs. The Antec may have about two inches.

Hmm, that's quite cool. Uncool part is fan outside the PSU, unless your supposed to swap it with warranty?

There is no info on the homepage about it, no such PSU, nor is there P183 or P193 cases.

Good it's about time PSU's got bigger and looks like if you made a hole at the top of the case you could get one of these fit still lol.. Dremel time might be closer than i thought.

Would of been nice if they did a better one too but i understand why they have not yet.

Wasn't that the AT form factor? Like pre Pentium/ATX days?

P193 and some more 183 here http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1313109
Just some minor changes to the old models.
Hopefully this will become an open standard so we can see it from more manufacturers.
