Darn heat producing pig, I was playing stalker clearsky, my card hit 85c and it locked up. I've got to take it apart again. Was having heat issues before, so I opened it up and hit it with as5. Guess with this type of ihs I should have used more as5... I tried to be frugal, but I get unless it's polished, you need more right? The ramsink and vrm pads were all intact. This card is starting to bug me, won't do 1512 shaders, overheats all the time... nice little $500 video card!

I'd say that's a tough bounce man...that's a lotta power, and really 85C shouldn't report unstable...maybe run GPU-z with updated polling in the background and create a log file and track what the other temps are, see if maybe the VRM's are overheating, mine generally stay about 3-6C less than my GPU core temp, but I'm not sure on a 280.

Right now I'm at stock clocks, folding a 511 point wu, gpu at 79c, vrms at 58 to 80c. (getting readings on 5) Edit: when it locked up, I noticed it shifting into lower power mode....temp problem?

Yikes, well that is more card than my GTX260 216...but damn! I rarely crest 63C no matter the WU or game. Though Furmark will push it to about 67C after 5 minutes or so.

Wonder if it's a driver related issue...could be the VPS resetting which would cause it to go back into low-power mode initially.

Apparently it thinks it is that much card, I'm ripping it apart again tomorrow to regrease it, pray for me heheh!

Good luck man! Though I would rather use MX-2 just because of conductivity purposes, but the AS5 should help out a little I would imagine...maybe it dried up since your last application? Keep us posted!

105C is the throttle temp, 85 shouldn't be a problem what so ever. I hit 87C in FurMark and 82-84C while gaming fan and card stock settings. Maybe it's a driver issue?

I doubt it. IF his card is overclocked heat could be a real issue for stability. Operation would have less impedance from heat if the parts were not stressed. That seems pretty on the level with my experiences. Have you not noticed the same thing?

Then take into consideration that a card running at stock with a poorly manufactured part is closer to it's end life, and heat can play a roll there as well.

I haven't overclocked mine. Well tested quickly if this could do GTX 285 speeds but wasn't stable so I run stock. Plenty of speed for me, will get better cooling first and then might test what this baby got in her trunk.

These don't like heat when overcloking, but I assumed he had stable overclocks, maybe they just aren't then

Now to read the Inno3D iChill GTX 260 review, wanna see that Accelero GTX 280 in action, hope it pops out real soon on the market.
edit: oh it looks so cool (pun intended). 50C load on GTX 260 is just WOW. I want it even more bad (or 'worse' for you english speaking folks?) now if it's possible, under 60C load on a case with GTX 280 could be reality.

Oh great, now I need new thermal pads.. Did a regrease, used lots more as5 this time, gpu temp dropped from 80c when folding a 511 point job to 74c! But now one of my vrms is running at 120c.. I noticed the thermal pad material was rather crappy, and I tried to fix it, but if the board shifted at all while I was putting it back together, it would have messed the pad up again. Darn.

What is good thermal pads for video cards? I used pieces off my vram pads to rebuild some of my vrm pads, the one that was hitting 120c is now at 84c, but I have one that's hitting 100c, I'm getting tired of pulling this card apart, need good thermal pads, help!

Thankyou Binge, anyone else have info from Canadian suppliers? Very desperate here, my card is crapping out on folding and games, my vrms are overheating... stupid 500 dollar card.

What happened to the "at least a week" I can recommend the XFX 4870x2, mine will do 840mhz with no mods and over here they are the cheapest of the x2's.

Well finally got my vrms down to normal, I guess for this card. I can take it apart in about 60 seconds now though! The as5 has knocked almost 10c off my load temps.. amazing. Still going to order some high quality thermal pads and redo this card.

How do you measure the vrm temps? Does GPUZ display them?

Yes GPU-Z does, at least the newer version. There are three of them for me, all of them are within 1-4C of eachother, and usually they're quite a ways lower than the GPU temps.

Everest also reads the VRM temps of these cards in my findings!

So it would be these ones labeled as VDDC temps (circled in red)?

Mine are at about 60C so that sounds OK. The GPU core is watercooled (that explains the 42C) but the VRM's are cooled by my unisink. The unisink gets decent airflow in my case.
