$1000 Build

Building a computer for my friend who's on a budget, just wanted to get some input and maybe suggestions from you guys. It's mostly for internet, but he does hop on a game with me a couple times a week. Here it is.

Cosmos 1000 Case - Free, my old case
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - $164.99
DFI LANPARTY DK X48 - $128.76
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 - $52.99
EVGA 512-P3-N973-TR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB - $129.99
CORSAIR CMPSU-550VX 550W Power Supply - $89.99
Hanns·G Hi-221DPB Black 22" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor - $159.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD6400AAKS 640GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive- $74.99
LG 22X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA - $24.99

Total - $826.69
Shipping APO via Newegg - $94.06

So, it comes to $920.75. The LanParty is an open box item, so hopefully it's still there when he's ready to buy. Any suggestions?

the only thing i can think of is this acer monitior i believe it's the best bang for the buck in monitors, but for everything else i would say thats a great list if he isn't going to be gaming a lot. the only other suggestion would be to get like a 9600GSO or somthing because I believe thats a bit over kill for someone thats not going to be gaming a lot

I like the 9600 GSO suggestion... seems like a good card. Even with the i7 combo, puts it a little out of his price range when the memory is added in... maybe I'll check around and perhaps find something cheaper and used.

I am going to argue for a better PSU, so when you upgrade, you will be able to run another 9800gt or maybe a GTX 280 one day.

Nope, no microcenter... we're currently stationed in Germany. He's set on the $1000 budget, and I wouldn't want to throw an i7 at him if he isn't going to need it. He is putting money away for the rig now though, so we will see about the i7 when he has all the money together, maybe it will be lower in price.

I'd change the 9800gt to a GTX260 or 1 gig 4870, which would put the price right at your budget limit.

IMO 9800GT and E8400 are no and no. It is time for quad core and at least 4870 512MB. OK maybe PII 720 BE. DDR2 should done the job right there aren`t noticeable benefits from DDR3.

why 3x 30$ for the ddr3 RAM? just wait till they go back down to 75$ for a 6gb kit and prices of graphic cards are going down soon... I would wait if I were you...

Does that mean you're going to buy stuff from germany? or are you coming to U.S soon?

We were most likely gonna order from Newegg, but I'm still searching around, looking for deals and such.
