Just got cable!

The asshole cable guy just left after finishing the internet installation so here I am looking for a router! Apparently the Road Runner modem can only handle one line until we get a router.

I used to have a Linksys WRT54G but it was smashed to pieces for reasons I will not reveal. Anyway, I know there are other inexpensive yet equally as effective routers out there. I'm looking for something in the 30-50 dollar range that won't cap my speed. (The cheaper the better!)

I payed for 10MB download but I'm getting 22-26MB on speedtest.net, so I need one that will give me back the exact speed.

here is a list of what newegg has in your price range.

Here is what Tigerdirect has to offer.

I used to have the wrt54g router and I liked that one too. I think its pretty safe to go with Belkin though I've had good luck with them.

The version you have scares me a bit since 2 out of 3 reviews says that it constantly disconnects . My family basically lives on the internet, so that is intolerable.

Thank you for the links to the routers in my range, but I'm looking forward to reading replies to people who have tried multiple routers or have a really good one to recommend. Once again, thanks.

Man, if you can find one of the earlier versions of the WRT54G (v2 seems to be one of the best), I'd stick with that. I've have mine for 8 or so years and it's so good, I pretty much forget it's there - I'm home on wirless to a work laptop constantly. I don't think I've ever had a drop out!

eBay?

Linksys routers are so expensive... I'm turning into a penny pincher. Should've spent less money on the computer and more money on other stuff. Keep the recommendations coming!

I have the N draft version of that Belkin also that crtecha has. Never EVER had one problem with it disconnecting. We also have RoadRunner and shared between 3 PC's, of which 2 are wireless G.

@cretecha

I got mine at Wal Mart for $50.

LOL! No he was a South Asian man with a horrible attitude. Started freaking out when my dad wanted him to drill the whole at the other side of the window. Wouldn't even let my dad or me speak, started screaming and the entire block heard it, "OOOH NOO OOOH NOO DO YOU WANT ME TO WORK OR NOT? LET ME DO MY JOB DO YOU WANT ME TO WORK OR NOT."

I'm calling up Time Warner later to complain and see what kind of bullshit answer they can come up with.

Cable won't work on my sister's desktop, he said something about Verizon having an IP in the computer and I have to erase it or something. Total bullshit if you ask me, but then again I don't know much so I'll call Verizon and ask later.

So the Belkin is a popular choice among TPUers! I'll consider that over the Linksys WRT54G2. (The black model with an internal antenna.)

You need to have IP addy set to dynamic as cable almost always uses DHCP (assigns IP numbers on the fly). That may be the issue.

haha I would have told him to leave and requested a second installer. I had a guy from brighthouse in florida pull some stuff like that. I just told em "look dude your in my home installing basically my shit cause I paid for it. You dont wanna run the cable thats cool". I just called and they had a new guy out in like 20 minutes and I got a month free. All because I asked him to run a additional line for a second bedroom.

Swear to God I should have just told him to get out. My dad ran cable lines all through the roof to every room in the house, and the guy basically cuts the damn cable line and shoves a connector in it to get me internet signal. We expected him to run another ****ing line. I'm definitely calling to complain.

I'm going to call now actually. Be back with the result.

Okay so I called, made the complaint, hung up with no freebies and then realized I forgot to add the fact that he cut the cable that basically gives every room in the house cable signal. My dad personally pulled those cables into every room in the house.

Whatever, I might call again and keep complaining, I might just forget it. My dad says forget about it, but he's Chinese. As with all Chinese people, they're afraid of everything, especially stuff like this. If people step all over us, we let it go. Sorry, not this time. I'm insanely angry this time, and I can care less about the freebies.

Awesome, well I spoke with the technician for a while and he tried explaining some crap to me that I didn't understand so I asked for a Chinese representative. Hopefully my dad can handle it, but right now I'm worrying about the router because I have Verizon DSL and Road Runner running at the same time. My computer is connected to RR but I need a router for the other 3-4 computers.

Okay so my father got into an argument with the Chinese female, she was on speaker and her attitude was probably just as bad as the technician's. The longer they spoke the faster and louder my father got. I ended up having him hang up.

Anyway, back to the router. Will a router decrease my speed? I'm getting a whopping 26MB download speed right now and I refuse to give that up!
