I always love your big posts Kursah, the amount you right each post is worth 2, you should be on 10,000 posts.
And @ Ketxxx I also did an A-Level physics course so I'm not just making stuff up, I spent ages piecing my HiFi together, I had an 800W RMS MIDI system before, now I have separates driven by a 140W amp, which sounds better? Had greater bass repsonse, etc. The seperates. But anyway, spending double the amount on 5.1 seems a waste to me, even if it did sound better, I cant personally see the point in having them if I cant have them in a 5.1 config |

I agree that was my mistake buying a 5.1 without thinking where to set those speakers. You can get a much powerful 2.1 for the price of a midrange 5.1 speaker. I'd go with Logitech brand

For futureproofing. Look at it as burning £30 with a lighter and spending £50 somewhen else instead of just spending a extra £20 now. Comparing a amp is also massively inaccurate and a unfair comparison to PC speakers setups, each have their own design purposes in the same ballpark, but under different conditions.

I was comparing a MIDI system to separates, and all speakers work on the same principal, they all have an amp somewhere
![]() I think I'm going to go for the X-230s, seems to be the best choice, I'd rather buy these now, then if I ever want 5.1 and can set it up properly I will buy a new set.

The power of the amp is the difference. Its a extreme example but it highlights my point. A amp used by a DJ in a club, and the kind of amp you would get with PC speakers. The difference is night and day, PC speakers you just can't give that much power to for a multitude of reasons. On the flipside of the coin PC speakers do other things which help make them more universal than a straight amp which soul purpose is to output a loud sound. Eitherway, do what you will. Most people will probably just find it weird that you opt for a 2.1 setup when you could easily store the other speakers for when you have room and in the meantime still have a killer 2.1 setup and be saving money in the long run. TBH I don't think you will notice much of a difference at all buying another 2.1 setup over your existing set.

What makes the X-540s so much better than the X-230s if in a 2.1 setup?

I have a set of 5.1 X-540's and I can't fault them.
The higher you turn them up, the better quality they are ![]()

Thing is, what I dont get, is that the X-540s are not much more than a redesign of the X-530s, and the X530s, are just a 5.1 version of the X-230s. So if I'm only going to be using a X-540s in 2.1, doesnt it make sense to save £20-30 and get the X-230s?

![]() http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/110755...searchsource=0 I used to have the exact same set on my gaming PC and they are awesome ![]() You could also consider these (if your trying to save some cash) http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/904740...s/Product.html They are the baby brothers of the X-230 My daughter has them attached to her XBOX360 / MP3 player and they sound amazing for such tiny speakers.

I decided to spend twice as much for 5.1s and I'm happy
My Youtube review of my new X-540s: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1tDgMKBT-M Check out Logitech. I'm not going back to Altec Lansing or Creative for my speakers again! |

You get 10 more watts from the 5.1s sub.
And also dude when you have 2 speakers in the rear, and you hit the Matrix button to convert Stereo to Surround. HA-HA-HA!!! Surround sound is like weed, it makes EVERYTHING better. Spend the $90. |

I'd say get the X-230's
X-230 # Main Specifications: # Total RMS power: 32 watts RMS # Satellites: 12 watts RMS (6W x 2) # Subwoofer: 20 watts RMS # Total peak power: 64 watts # Frequency response: 40Hz - 20kHz # Drivers Satellites: (2) 2" drivers per satellite # Drivers Subwoofer: 5.25" ported driver # Satellites Dimensions: 8" x 2.5" x 3" # Subwoofer Dimensions: 9" x 6" x 9.25" # Signal-to-noise ratio: >96dB X-540 Technical Specifications o Total RMS power: 70 watts RMS Satellites: 45 watts RMS (2 x 7.4W front, 15.4W centre, 2 x 7.4W rear) Subwoofer: 25 watts RMS o Total peak power: 140 watts o Frequency response: 40 Hz - 20 kHz The center & rear speakers of X-540 gives the boost and the sub gets a +5W over X-230 The X-230 is a powerful speaker despite of being a 2.1 for the last time get the X-230! Studabaker ya the matrix mode is a + for X-540's
